A SOLDIER'S PERSPECTIVE
THE WEB'S LEADING MILITARY BLOG SINCE 2004
Sometimes I think that children look at soldiers almost as Gods or untouchables. We are placed on this high pedestal and looked up to to the point that we can’t relate. I got this letter shortly before the war and while we were sitting on the border awaiting the order to head north. Again, this is a new feature of the site and you can read all the letters from children that I post by clicking on the “Letters From Children” category to the right (brilliant name eh?).

Dear U.S. Soldier, 2-20-2003
My name is Ashley [last name deleted] and I am 10 years old. I go to the Bytheville Intermediate School. I also have a mom, dad, and a grandpa. I had a grandma but, she died in the year of 2002. My favorite things to play are school, and basketball. I like to swim too! My favorite things to eat are potato chips and pickles. Because they are both crunchy. My favorite music is Hip-Hop. Have you ever heard of those things. You probably have heard of some of those things but, not all of them. Oh, I’m sorry but, Mrs Burnett is teaching. I have to go now, but please write me back.
Yours Truly,
AshleyP.S. I have two brothers and one sister.
I did write her back and explained that I may have heard of those things, but wasn’t sure. I just thought it was funny she was writing me as her teacher was teaching.

Children aren’t the only ones. We all think you are amazing.

Even Generals are “people” too…I met a four star General (was told that he is second only to the Army Chief of Staff) this afternoon, who shook my hand (twice!) and gave me an army pin (I wasn’t sure if this meant the General and I were going steady???). Anyway, he seemed really nice and was dressed in the new Army camouflage uniform. But I think anyone wearing a uniform seems somewhat removed to children, like police officers (though they scare me too when I am driving on the beltway!), even clergy and , when I was in school, whenever a nun called my name, I started shaking because I assumed I was in trouble!

Lol ~ this is my kinda kid,LOL…I’ve been known to pen a letter or two during a really boring lecture in class, LOL! It’s called “multitasking,” I believe, LOL

LOL Sabo….I think you ARE going “steady” with the General now
What got me on the letter was how she said when her grandma had passed. Not “in 2002″ but “in the year of” that is old timey.
Cj, was this one of those kids from Arkansas?
CJ
Yup, sure was from Arkansas. I quite enjoyed their letters.
