A SOLDIER'S PERSPECTIVE
THE WEB'S LEADING MILITARY BLOG SINCE 2004
There are no limits to what children will say in their letters. I think that since they are writing to people they’ll never meet, they say what they’re really thinking. Mike wanted to make sure that I knew what kinds of other people were in his class and writing to me. Letters like this ALWAYS brought a smile to my face when I really would rather frown and be angry. This letter was also from Blytheville, AR.

Dear Soldier,
Hello. My name is Mike and I am writing to you to say say thanks for protecting us and our country. It is a brave thing you are doing. I wish you the best of luck in your endevor.
Well, let me tell you something of my self. I am an 8th grade student and in a class of, well…extremely crazed and mentaly ill people. They are all around nut cases, but I belive they have some sense. When they want to.
I like to read and enjoy a quiet and tranquill atmosphere. I also enjoy classical music, such as Motzart and Beethoven. My favort food is sushi. More specific, sea eel.
Well, write back to me then.
Sincerly,
Michael
Sea eel, eh? Sounds kinda crazed and mentally it to me!! Anyway, that letter came from Mrs. Haywood’s class from a school in Georgia. I got many letters from her class and Mrs. McCall, many of which you’ll see.
I had the opportunity to meet many of these kids when I returned from Iraq. I was invited to an assembly they were holding to honor soldiers. I had the honor to sit in the VIP section and made an honorary Eagle, the school mascot. I was also able to take a few minutes and address the students to let them know what writing to soldiers meant, even if they didn’t get a response. It was a really humbling experience and I was treated far better than I needed to be. The Army had also sent an Army choir to sing some patriotic songs for the school and the JROTC presented the colors, obviously nervous to be around real soldiers.
I can’t get over how much I loved getting letters from kids.

Where in GA were these kids? I can’t imagine many 8th grade boys in these parts likeing sea eel and Motzart.

The school is Ebenezer Middle School, halfway between Rincon and Springfield if memory serves.

I think seeing the kind of music this kid enjoys, anyone would seem mental or however he described them! LOL! If this is the case, classify me with his fellow students! That was a funny letter!
I remember when the Gulf War was going on, we wrote to some soldiers as a class. I believe I was about 14 or so. I did get letters back from the soldier but my mom was nervous that a grown man (I believe he was 25 at the time) was taking too much of an interest in a 14 year old and I wasn’t allowed to write him anymore. We had written about 5 or 6 letters back and forth before I wasn’t allowed anymore. Anyway, I remember when I first got a response back I was so excited that my letter actually made it to a soldier.
Anyway, not sure why I shared that! LOL!

Now there’s a kid after my own heart! I could have described quite a few of my co-workers just like he describes the kids in his class!!! The difference is that they are the quiet and tranquil ones and I am the more outspoken one who asks the questions that no one else will ask (of course I pay the price for it afterwards!).
CJ
Hilary, you shared that because you’re also extremely crazed and mentally ill.

Something tells me that this kid is going to be a brain surgeon or the newest Einstein. What a terrific letter!

Wow , hes getting good education somewhere. He talks better than I do! lol

I can’t help but smile when I read letters such as this. These little ones take life so serious when they should be laughing and enjoying be a child.
You have a big heart CJ. I am sure you made these children feel special.

That made me laugh out loud. Hard to believe that’s an 8th grader. Tranquil?? Sushi? What a hoot.

I’m still laughing about this one! LOL! Gosh I wonder how many of us could describe people we work with or meet on a daily basis as being crazed and mentally ill???? I know right off the top of my head, I could think of several!
I really enjoy reading these letters. These kids tell it exactly as they see it. They don’t worry if what they have to say is politically correct or not. Wish more adults were the same way……
