US charges four in alleged plot to attack military facilities

LOS ANGELES (AFP) – The US government said Wednesday it had indicted four men on “terrorism charges” for plotting to attack military bases and facilities, an Israeli Consulate and Jewish synagogues in California.

The Justice Department said the four, identified as Kevin James, 29, Levar Washington, 25, Gregory Patterson, 21, and Hammad Samana, 21, had been intending to “levy war against the United States”.

The government said the four had observed military bases and recruiting offices in the Los Angeles area with the aim of killing military personnel. It alleged they had also targetted the Israeli Consulate, Israel’s El Al airline and synagogues.

“Today’s indictment alleges that these defendants turned their terrorist plans and actions against locations in their own country, targeting American military facilities, religious institutions, and other facilities right here in the United States,” Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said in a statement.

Samana is a lawful US resident from Pakistan while the three other men are US nationals. They are all in custody. If convicted of all charges against them, the men could face life in prison.

The men’s recruitment, by Levar Washington, allegedly started in prison, the government said.

Thanks, CJ! A Navy guy (fixing up hurt Marines) asked if I’d heard anything about a terrorist attack on San Francisco (where he’s from). I emailed this to him thinking this might be what had started the rumors that upset him.

Keep up the good work of keeping those of us who NEVER see any news informed of the good and the bad.

One piece of news I do know is that Cindy Sheehan is (was?) supposed to be at the Brunswick Naval Air Station for the Blue Angels show (this past weekend or today) to demonstrate against the warmonger attitude of the Angels. This is being done on a base just voted to be closed by the BRAC commission. Hopefully she survives the wrath of those present….or maybe not.

Those 3 U.S. nationals, if convicted, should have their citizenship stripped. ThEN throw them in prison.
