A SOLDIER'S PERSPECTIVE
THE WEB'S LEADING MILITARY BLOG SINCE 2004
A new book titled “Kill, Kill, Kill” has been published claiming that U.S. soldiers got their kicks killing innocent, unarmed Iraqis. SSG Jimmy Massey writes that the fault lies in an “exaggerated sense of threat.” I’m sorry, that’s FORMER SSG Jimmy Massey. And yet another in the long line of Bush haters.
He claims that he and other Marines murdered hundreds of unarmed Iraqis. Supposedly, he claims to have knowledge of what the highest military authorities are doing and saying. You know, I’m a Sergeant First Class responsibility for carrying out the training objectives of Generals and Colonels all over the Army and I don’t even know what the “highest military authorities” are doing and saying except what is publicized. I find it hard to believe that Massey’s claims have much any base at all considering his rank and position. I expect people to call me to same task when/if I start making some outrageous claims and I’m not stationed as the personal assistant to a 4-star General somewhere. Thankfully, that’s a job for O-3 (Captain) or higher lackies and not a combat-tested Sergeant First Class or Staff Sergeant. So, we’ll never know. That was facetiousness, by the way. I could do it better.
Anyway, Massey has been giving speeches about his book, which was published in…….FRANCE!!! In an interview with the World Socialist Web Site, he begins slamming the Marine Corps from the point of recruitment. As a recruiter, he said he did and saw things that he didn’t agree with. I thought is was the job of NCOs to correct deficiencies in incorrect behavior?! I can think of a couple of times where I was asked to do something questionable by both peers and leaders. I just didn’t do them!! It’s a sad marine (and soldier) that would bend to those who aren’t doing right.
About basic training, he says, “Boot camp is designed to dehumanize and desensitize a person to violence.” EXACTLY!! Our job during wartime is to kill the enemy. It sounds horrible in writing, but in reality that last thing you want a soldier or marine to do is to think about the kind of person the enemy is. That gets people killed. All we should worry about in combat is survival. With that said, there are rules that govern our use of force. You don’t shoot at an unarmed person. You treat your prisoners with respect and take care of them and keep them safe. On today’s battlefield, the enemy isn’t as clear as it used to be. You take into account the way the enemy has been acting and conducting business and you exercise caution against anyone likeminded activities, innocent or not. All too often, innocence is a backdrop to guilt.
When I first got the tipoff on this book through an email (hattip to Kara), I was a little irritated. When I read about the person publishing the book and did a search on the name, I realized who I was dealing with. It’s a socialist, America-hating, disgruntled Marine (no offense to REAL Marines) who didn’t have the gumption to publish his slanderish tome here in America. I’m sure the French will eat this up.
Thanks for Mudville Gazette for the trackback support.

This simply shows that many people who serve in our military to do not do so for pure patriotism and dedication to service. Many military members use their experience as U.S. warfighters to bolster their political views. This really irritates me. The story is played out decade after decade…vets using their experience to sell a book, make some money, or feel important by voicing their (mmmm…mostly ridiculous) opinions. The worst part of this is they are tarnishing the titles and amazing exploits of the other people who share their rank and service in the military.

OMG that is flippin’ infuriating.

i just never understand why people feel the need to lie to the world. Its just not right.

I’m not military…I just support those that are. So forgive my ignorance but shouldn’t he be on trial for murder? If not here, then surely France or Belgium would say they have the right to try him. Since they seem to believe that our military members are accountable to them, where are they now?

I might expect this stuff from one of you dog faces, or squids, but from a devildog! Well, I guess it just goes to show that even the best of the best can mess up some times. You don’t know how hard it was for me to say that!
CJ
Well, devildog, we’ll oversee your momentary lapse of judgement this time.

Heh! Heh! Heh! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you everybody!

I see nothing wrong with writing a book, though for this particular book and the opinions expressed I feel, well not shame, but disappointment in a fellow and former service member. Many people who have fought in the most recent conflicts have written, and profited, from thier experiacnes. Former Marine Anthony Swofford’s best-selling 2003 book “Jarhead” is a soon to be release movie, and a good read. I read it in the week it took me to make it through FT Bliss CRC and to Kuwiat on my way to Iraq. Love My Rifle More Than You: Young and Female in the U.S. Army by Kayla Williams is a recent book I hope to read soon. She was an Army E5/SGT in Iraq in Military Intelligence with the 101st from FT. Campbell. Her interview on NPR was fantastic and she has mostly fond memories of her times in the Army and forward deployed. Of course War isn’t nice, so not all of her memoreies are pleasent ones. But it is life and reality of war.
Many bolggers have complied thier blog posts into books as well. My War: Killing Time in Iraq by Colby Buzzell, the blogger who started the whole blogging in wartime controversy that led to the DoD policy on blogs. Again, something I haven’t red yet, but hope to soon. I’ve even toyed with the notion of writing my own book, with my own unique perspective.
Its funny, but many memories of the year I spent in the Sandbox focus on my family back home. On letters, and emails, and carepackages and late night phone calls. Sometimes its hard to believe I was there.

I did not make it clear in this last post that I feel the author CJ mentioned is obviously a liar, exagerator, and just plain wrong. Hes a Bush-hater, American-hater, yes.
I just tend to go off on tangents sometimes. Its the ADD.

This I will defend! I have to keep repeating this to myself. When I was new to the military I realized that my expectations were way too high for the soldiers I was a peer to. There were even times that it got as bad as I could not imagine fighting beside some of these “soldiers”. Well my father who has more experience with the military than I have years on this earth would remind me that I joined to protect the rights of everyone. Most importantly I am to protect the rights of those who I disagree with. That even if my service is not appreciated that there very few things more noble than to be in service to my country. I still have to remind my self of these things over and over. When ever I see Cindy Sheehan on TV, or when I read about protestors at Walter Reed putting fake coffins on the side walk in front of soldiers who survived their buddies, but are missing their legs. America is the greatest country, and will always be in my eyes. For all of our faults, we have become a nation were you can say what you feel and you do not have to worry about being killed or watching your family killed because of your beliefs. Cindy Sheehan, Michel Myers, and now this EX-Marine are so blessed that they didn’t live in Iraq before the war. Where their anti government views would have been them signing their death certificates. Something else my father explained to me once when I was frustrated with the way I believe vs. the people I protect. The U.S. Military is a cross section of us as a nation. We will have criminals, geniuses, and everything in-between in our forces. So just like our nation we will have scumbags in the military. At least I know that I was not one of them. Also that be it I was put into a situation to kill “innocent, unarmed Iraqis” I would know what the right thing to do was. If this mans life was not in danger and he had admitted to killing these innocents then he deserves to be tried for murder. I have not read the book, so I am sure I don’t know the whole story but all of it stinks of propaganda from nations that do not support us.

Shame on this man for bringing more hate for America. If he loves France so much, maybe he could just move over there!

This is exactly why I have a “Boycott France” bumper sticker on my van…. they are the only fools who would even entertain believing or spending money on such American-hating, money-gubbing bullshit as this. Go on France, open up a bottle of your wine and curl up with this book….hope you don’t choke on your cheese!

I read about SSG Jimmy Massey in the paper from the Knight Ridder/Tribune News service today. The article said “each of his claims is either demonstrably false or exaggerated – according to his fellow Marines, Massey’s own admissions and the five journalists who were embedded with Massey’s unit.”
I served as a Hospital Corpsman with the Marines during the Vietnam era, and I have a lot of respect for the Marines. Jimmy Massey’s actions are a disgrace and in no way reflects the qualities of the many good men I had the pleasure to serve with. I cannot express the contempt I have for the actions of this one man.
I pray he gets help, as he obviously needs it

Happy Birthday on November 10 to all the Marines who read this from a former Corpsman.
