A SOLDIER'S PERSPECTIVE
THE WEB'S LEADING MILITARY BLOG SINCE 2004
I haven’t done one of these in awhile and since my last post wasn’t as uplifting, I’d thought I’d follow it with this one. I’ve also got a great story from the military too, which will be posted later today.
Like I said before, I love these letters from children (though today’s “child” was 18 years old at the time the letter was written). This made me chuckle for more than one reason. You probably will too.

Dear Friend,
If you would like to get to know me more better my address is [complete address withheld] Caruthersville, Mo. 63830. My name is Jennifer [last name deleted] I wouldn’t mind to get to know you a little bit better to. I hope we can become friends in are letters. I am 18 years old by B-Day is 12-29-84. I’m sorry but are teacher told us to say stuff like this so if if sound like I am trying to get a date well not right now. I wouldn’t mind gitting to now you just a little bit better. Hey I know that alot of people smoke over there. If you smoke tell me and I’ll try to get you some smokes if not then I’ll still talk to you. I’m not that type of person to make some one smoke. I’ve been smoking ever sence I was in 6th grade. I really wouldn’t mind to get to know you better so if you want to talk to some one you know my address. So I c-ya later.
Your friend

That was a very nice change of pace. I really love to read your letters. You are building up quite a fan club.

I don’t think she’s 18 either. But at least she’s honest enough to tell you her teacher told her what to write to a complete stranger in uniform….
I sometimes wish I had someone to prompt me what to write, because it’s hard for me not to treat them all like my grandchildren. i.e. “Change your underwear daily”, “Don’t smoke”, “Eat more vegetables”……;)

nice! but you should show her that she is loosing the battle with lung tar…… Its truly sad she has be smoking that long. But her heart is in the right place.

That is hilarious, CJ! Y’know…maybe one day you should gather them up and publish them; like those “letters to Santa” or “letters to God” by children, books.
You could research letters received by other soldiers; not just your own, and you might have quite a treasure on your hands.

Absolutely. Actually, when I wrote her back, I expressly told her that she’s slowly killing herself and that to be a true patriot, you need to be alive to be patriotic. Smoking is bad enough, starting that early is terrible.

LOL this was great! Gotta love these kid letters, LOL. Good job on the smoking “lesson” ~ I hope she listened.

CJ – The title of this article is very misleading. I saw it and thought…hmmm, this could be very interesting — CJ is going to post some dating tips for his single readers; but even though I enjoyed the letter, I must say I was left wanting to get some “practical advice” on “looking for a date”!;>)

This put a smile on my face, “Today’s “child” is 18.” I’m giggling all over the place.
