A SOLDIER'S PERSPECTIVE
THE WEB'S LEADING MILITARY BLOG SINCE 2004
Getting letters in combat from kids is just like medicine. I didn’t get this letter until after we had taken Baghdad and things were settling down. As you can see from the date, it was written the day we went to war.
When I returned from Iraq, I had the chance to meet a few of the students who wrote to me from Ebenezer Middle School. I was invited to an assembly and spoke to the student body about what it meant to get letters during a deployment. It was probably the sixth greatest day of my life (after my marriage, birth of three kids, and my baptism). Here’s the letter:

March 21, 2003Dear Soldier,
My name is Quinn and I’m 13 years old and I go to Ebenezer Middle School. I am in the 8th grade.
What is your name? Are you male or female? Where do you live? Do you enjoy being a soldier? What do you do in your spare time? Are you married? Sorr, for all of the questiosn but I’m just curious.
Thank you for serving our country. I am very thankful for you and all of the other soldiers for fighting for our country.
Sincerely,
Quinn [last name deleted]
Natually, I wrote him back and answered all his questions. Unfortunately, Quinn wasn’t one of the kids I got to meet.
