Spc. Derek Castro, from the 490th Civil Affairs Battalion, engages in some good-natured arm wrestling with an Iraqi boy during a humanitarian visit to the town of Istaqal. Yup, that looks like a rubber band on the kid’s head. Don’t ask me, I’m just as confused.

To arm-wrestle little kids.

Salminio suffers from BDS. Ignore him.

We are fighting not just against Al Qaeda of today but a war for the hearts and minds of children who otherwise would grow up to a negative and destructive world view. This picture is a beautiful example of how it is done. Thank-you for publishing it.

Interesting comments by all. It really would be interesting to look into the future, say in 6 or 7 years and see what this kid is doing.

I am the photographer who took the picture. Being in Iraq and dealing with Iraqis of all ages everyday, there are many thatlike us and some still hate us. But the old regime didn’t care about its people. These kids have nothing, many of the villages have no power, plumbing, or medical supplies. Many villages have garbage and rivers of human waste flowing through it. The soldier in this picture is part of team bringing these necessities we take for granted to many Iraqis. It all starts with relationship building like he is doing in the photo. BTW, it is a rubber band and since these kids have very little, they play with what they can get and leave nothing to waste.
