A SOLDIER'S PERSPECTIVE

Theodore Roosevelt’s ideas on Immigrants and being an AMERICAN in 1907.
“In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person’s becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American … There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn’t an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag … We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language … and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.”

CJ – I was reminded of SPC Sergio Lopez, who has given so much to his adopted country, as I read the words of Theodore Roosevelt. I am the daughter of two immigrants who chose to live in this country and become Americans and raise their children as Americans. I am proud of my Cuban heritage but I am SO grateful that, thanks to my parents, I have enjoyed the privilege of being born and raised in this great country. Sabo

Wow! How great are those statements!! I feel the exact same way and to read that from Theodore Roosevelt is awesome! Why can’t some of our elected officials say that now?!

Too bad we’ll never see that in a “Multicultural Teaching & Learning” textbook….. I should share this with my classmates, but I’m sure someone would be offended by it, an it’s definitely not PC….
