A SOLDIER'S PERSPECTIVE
THE WEB'S LEADING MILITARY BLOG SINCE 2004
I’m not going to hold any punches here. I’m agitated and unnerved. I’m also going to come across as unsympathetic. Let me this: it’s a shame that those reporters died. There that’s all the attention they’re getting from me. Here we are two days after the event and already every major news outlet has “memorialized” the fallen journalists in Iraq. But, what about the soldier who died with them? Anyone know his name?
The media has found a way to alienate EVERY soldier serving in the armed forces, especially those that have given everything. I cannot find ONE story about the soldier who died with those two CBS journalists yesterday. Instead, here’s the honor given to that one soldier:
“A wave of car bombings snatched the lives of two CBS News team members”, later identifying them by name. No mention AT ALL of the soldier killed with these “journalists” at the MSNBC site.
The Washington Post published a story about Kimberly Dozier being “critically wounded and her two crew members, as well as a U.S. soldier.” The U.S. soldier is never named.
CBS published the same sob story: “CBS News cameraman Paul Douglas and soundman James Brolan, who were killed by a car bomb while accompanying a military patrol in Baghdad, along with a U.S. soldier”.
It takes ABC News eight paragraphs to mention “A U.S. soldier and an Iraqi translator also died in the blast.”
It’s almost an afterthought to these people. These stories are all over the internet and it pisses me off!! I fully understand that the names of soldiers killed in combat are not released until their families are notified, but NOT ONE article mentions even trying to identify the soldier. The insensitivity of the news media is astounding as they pat themselves on the back and console each other on their little loss.
The difference in how the media is prosecuting this war has just been magnified 100 times with this story. That soldier who died was protecting those “journalists” that died, not the other way around. That soldier was probably going to be the subject of another crappy story about how bad the war is going anyway.
You know what?! I, for one, could care less about your loss. I don’t want to hear about how many years they’ve been at CBS, or how many stories they’ve written, or how they risked their lives reporting in Iraq. SO WHAT!! You know why I don’t care? Because you, the media, have desensitized me to their deaths. Oh, NOW you want to mention the names of people killed in Iraq and tell us their life stories, huh? NOW you want us to feel sorry for those killed in deadly explosives laid by evil Iraqi terrorists. Where’s the story about how the journalists deserved it because they shouldn’t have been in Iraq to begin with now?
If the media really wants to impress me, let’s see media-wide stories about that soldier who died with them when the name is released by the military. I want to know how that soldier was a veteran “of war coverage who proved [his] bravery and dedication every single day” just like they hailed those journalists.
The media sickens me with its self-righteous attitude and “woe is me” mentality when dealt a blow. You want to impress me further? Send more journalists to embed with the same 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division that those journalists were embedded with. Prove your “bravery and dedication” to me. I will not stop sending emails, making phone calls, and scouring the internet until I’ve brought you his story!!

You’re going to be waiting for a long, long time. That soldier, whom Centcom has not yet identified, will never be any more than “a soldier” to the media. Next to the bravery of the reporters, who VOLUNTEER for such dangerous duty, a soldier, who has CHOSEN TO KILL, will be nothing.
That’s how it works, and will, until we get enough guts and power in this country to kick the bums out.

Patriot,
I agree with you about the media. They whine and complain but never give our brave soldiers the credit that they deserve for defending our (their) freedom.
I hope that someday they see the light and report what our men and women are really doing over there!

This is one of the best posts I’ve read lately! Not only have they not identified the Soldier or thanked him, they haven’t said boo about the other SIX that were injured. Asses.

Ironically, Marty and I were just talking about this very subject last night. I find it really irritating that the idiot media personnel get more attention than our soldiers. Guess they forgot just who it was and is who allow them to have the right to spout their crap.

It’s been like that all along. The media thinks that they are so much more important than the soldiers that they don’t even mention the names of the soldiers hurt or killed. It sickens me.
Interresting thing about the reporters – during the initial invasion they were all wanting to be embeded, didn’t care how dangerous it was, thought there might be chemical or biological weapons but wanted to be embeded anyway. Now, they say it is too dangerous and they mostly have to stay in the green zone because of that. I think it might be because the war was popular at first, but now that some public opinion has gone the other way they don’t care enough to get out there and get the story.
