I believe I had heard on a news station that was going over his military records that when he was in Vietnam he was a Logistics Officer. That interprets to "Supply Officer." How many combat patrols do Supply Officers go on? Maybe there is somebody within your blog community who can check this? That would be an interesting tidbit of information. For info.
