I’ll let Seamus’ All Hands email tell the story.

All hands:

Here is a warning from 1Sgt Grainger, the Charlie Co 1/25 First Sergeant, who is sending almost daily Sitreps from Iraq. He warns that a reporter, named Monte Morin, from Stars and Stripes, has “put pain on his Marines.” He does not elaborate, but he does warn other troops in Iraq.

Below this warning is his 25 July Sitrep.

Thanks and Semper Fi, First Sergeant,

Seamus

I think that the following information needs to get out to all hands to beware of the following correspondent with the Stars and Stripes. He has left the Fallujah area and is headed towards Ramadi. We weren’t aware until damage was done as to what some of his stories were up to. They started posting after he left. It’s not that he lied, it’s what he left out or took from one scenario and added to make it look like it was part of another story that brought the powers of above to put pain on my Marines. Until they got the whole story up to higher that is. Of course by then the damage is done to the younger Marines with all of the accusations and such. He did have some good stories but don’t assume because he works for the Stars and Stripes that his news stories are to motivate the Marines and soldiers in the AO as we did. In order to sensationalize headlines things were left out or made to seem as if they were something else. This gent use to work for the LA Times, not sure if that has a bearing or not as I don’t want to falsely accuse anyone of anything, I just want to warn you. I am not saying you should not have him over or talk to him or the stars and stripes but basically watch your ass or you will read about it. Monte Morin is the reporter.

I have no clue what Morin is up to, or if it is Morin himself or an editor up the chain. Judging by Morin’s background, I’m willing to guess it is him. I do not know what stories got the 1stSgt and his Marines heat, but thank goodness it was resolved. If I hear anything else about Morin, I’ll post an update.

Update: LC provided a story in the comments that could be the source of the 1stSgt’s warning.

  1. I found this article in the Stars & Stripes after reading the warning about Morin on this site.

  2. Sorry if I posted twice but I’m a beginner at this stuff.

    =-)

  3. Thanks, LC. I can see what the good First Sergeant was pissed about.

  4. I can see, too. Thank you again, LC.

  5. Ladies and Gentlemen
I met Monte Morin some time ago when he worked for the L.A. Times. I called him there because there was something unusual about a murder investigation and I wanted the Times to knw. We met before the sun came up and did what repoters do. We snooped and pooped out the facts.
Since then I found out he was writing for Stars and Stripes and tonight I found this caution.
Monte Morin had the highest respect for me, a a Viet Vet (USMC). I know he has the same for you all. Guys like Monte do not have to go to Iraq. They ask for it. Just like you who serve?
I am going to read the article that concerns you and let Monti know theres a concern here.
But lets agree as Marines one generation to the next that you give him a fair shake as to whaht ever the issue is because I ask you to, keeping in mind that I have not read the article.
If Monte erred, he will be the first to admit it. If he did not I anticipate he will stand on the facts. after all he is there to report the truth, thats what reporters, real reporters do, monte is the real deal.
I want him home to his friends family and loved ones as much as I want you all home safely, so do this former Marine a favor, cover his back, tell him where he may have done wrong and give him my best for a Happy New Year.
And to the rest of you Semper Fideles.

  6. Something similar to this happened to a family member of mine.

A *major* documentary came out a few years ago and my family member was in it. The director cut up everything he said so in the end it made them look like an idiot… and the end result was it appeared they meant the exact *opposite* of what they thought, felt, and said in the full context of their words.

I was pissed to be sure. In the end it seems like this Monte guy didn’t intend to do that, but it is frustrating when reporters or movie makers do whatever they want to make their “story” sound good or they way they want it to. And people believe it because it was “on tv.”
