A SOLDIER'S PERSPECTIVE
THE WEB'S LEADING MILITARY BLOG SINCE 2004
Comments may be a tad funky this evening. I am going to install a new plug-in that is all Web 2.0 nifty (I hate the term “Web 2.0″ btw), and change the way comments work completely. Instead of relying on SK2 (Spam Karma 2) to catch the bad boys and girls trying to pass off ED pills, Texas Holdem poker sites, and a lot of ?’s, you’re going to have to read a little image captcha to comment. I hate the image captcha, but too many good comments are getting eaten by SK2. Great plug-in and I highly recommend it for anyone using WordPress, but this nifty Web 2.0 (did I mention I hate the phrase “Web 2.0?”) comment plug-in doesn’t play nicely with it. We must have anti-spam measures, so just call it the Ballistic Missile Shield for the blog.
So, stand by for a bit while I work on this here comment system.
Update: Well, I have good news and bad news. The good news is the AJAX comment goodness worked great. The bad news is AuthImage doesn’t work at all. This means that legit comments won’t go through because you can’t see the captcha and thus solve it. I’ve disabled the plug-ins and I will have to contact our host to ensure some software libaries are installed.
Update 2: Eh, I changed my mind. Instead of using captcha, which I have always been against (you can ask CJ what I told him about it), I’ve downloaded two new anti-spam plug-ins that I haven’t used before. They are both enabled and I’ll be watching comments closely over the next couple of days to see how they hold up against the massive amounts of spam ASP gets on a daily basis.
Yay for AJAX comments goodness!
Update 3: Well, I noticed AJAX Comments 2.0 isn’t working exactly as it should. The AJAX portion of it looks great, but the comment doesn’t show up unless you refresh which kinda defeats the purpose of the AJAX Comments. I’ve contacted the plug-in author about this and hope to hear back from him soon. I’m leaving the plug-in enabled for now just because it looks cool.
Update 4: As much as it pains me, I’m disabling AJAX Comments for now. I really enjoy adding new things to the blog to make it high speed/low drag. Perhaps I can get the issues lined out and everyone else will be able to play with AJAX comments, too.
Update 5: I’m going to play with AJAX Comments again. We’ll see if it works this time.

Test
CJ
It’s like Star Wars for ASP.
Cpl M Testing
Making sure that you can comment without captcha.
Cpl M
Okay. How about another test with the new Ballistic Missile Sheild for the Blog installed.
Upinsmoke
Your blog eats my post regularly. Testing here. This is the 4th time Ive tried to comment here.
Cpl M
Doh! Not exactly write yet.
CJ
I like talking to myself.
Cpl M
Yeah. I do, too. In fact I may even switch out the AJAX plug-ins. I need to talk to you, though, and get your thoughts.
Cpl M
Switch themes per the author’s instructions to test. Does it work right this time?
Cpl M
Wow, it pulled an entirely different comment to display. Interesting.
Cpl M
Smoke, did you get the email I sent you? My email is over there to the right. Shoot me an email and we’ll get it taken care of. Don’t feel bad, a lot of new commenters get flagged as spam at first.
SK
ACK!!! I’m so confused. lol Hi guys:)
Hilary
Huh?
Cowardly Lion
TECH GEEK!! Haaaaaaahahahahaha!!
Cpl M
Confusion is good, SK and Hilary. Builds character.
Yeah, that’s about right, CL.
Cpl M
Yay! Another test!
Cpl M
Perhaps the del.iciou.us plugin caused problems.
Cpl M
Ugly default theme test once again.
Cpl M
And it worked.
Cpl M
Works?
Cpl M
Still work in default mode?
Cpl M
Yup. But not here. I’m getting annoyed. Hey CL. Let me know when you catch back up with this post.
SK
CL? LOL
Cpl M
Yeah, its from last night when the two of us were joking around. heh Ask her to explain it all.
Cowardly Lion
You like talkin’ to yourself, dontcha? It’s ok. It’s a sign of high intelligence. You just don’t have anyone intelligent to keep you company in here. Well, until NOW. Cuz you got me and SK. *grin*
Cpl M
You sayin CJ isn’t intelligent? That is really messed up.
Cowardly Lion
*ahem* And where IS he right now? I don’t see CJ or he would have been included. It was just you babbling stuff about tests. Is there something we should know?
Cpl M
I talked to him a bit ago. He was working on stuff. And the tests are all about this spiffy AJAX comments. Have you even notice the comment appears in the thread without having to refresh?!
Cowardly Lion
Yes, I noticed. Very cool. But I thought you were doing a spam block thing? Isn’t that the goal? To save us from C1@Lis?
Cpl M
Um. Not exactly. It’ll all be explained in a few minutes.
Cpl M
Does it work with this theme?
Cpl M
Sure does! I like!
CJ
I would’ve been here sooner, but my drool therapy was extended. I’m learning new words to make my “duh’s” sound more intelligent. Now I say, “duheahrrea” and “duhble mint gum is yum” and other things. Sorry, I’m missed the fun here. I had a LOT of schoolwork due yesterday and had to take a test and it all piled up. Looks good M.
Cpl M
CJ, what about duhmmis?! Glad you like the new look, boss. Regretting you’ve given me free reign with stuff yet?
CJ
Only if the videos don’t work. Hey, if we need to, we can use http://www.soldiersperspective.com to test stuff on before implementing. Only problem is that it isn’t hosted and would have to be. Right now it’s just a paid-for domain.
Cpl M
We could prolly host it here. Just put the WP install in a subdirectory.
alfredo
you know,… I had some problems too with AJAX comments… my users had to type in every single time the requested info to start commenting
it was so frustrating that I had to deactivate
let me know if you found a solution for this!
thanks
