I did not realize that I was breaking the law all this time.

The U.S. Senate has passed legislation clarifying U.S. law to ensure that veterans and service members not in uniform can salute the flag. S 1877, sponsored by Sen. James Inhofe, R-Okla., would address the ambiguity of current law, which states that veterans and service members not in uniform should place their hand over their hearts, without specifying whether they can or should salute the flag.

“The salute is a form of honor and respect, representing pride in one’s military service,” Inhofe said. “Unfortunately, current U.S. law leaves confusion as to whether veterans and service members out of uniform can or should salute the flag.”

Inhofe said he believes this is “an appropriate way to honor and recognize the 25 million veterans who have served in the military and remain as role models to others citizens. Those who are currently serving or have served in the military have earned this right, and their recognition will be an inspiration to others,” he said.

The House will have to agree to the legislation before it can become law.

  1. Patriot.

I really don’t give a damn about this Bill. When it came time for a Salute. Then a Salute is rendered. Do not tell me to place my hand over my heart.

    ALLONS

  2. That’s what I’m saying, Allons. I’ve been, and would continue to do anyway, saluting the flag in civilian clothes. I salute that flag at least twice day: in the mornings when I raise my flag and in the evening when I take it down. It’s just more useless crap being debated on the Hill while our borders are open.

  3. What will they do, send the Salute Police after me if I salute the Flag in my civvies? I don’t care a whit what congress (both houses) do or do not do…with regard to this issue I will do what my heart says is right, and those professional muck shovellers can kiss my poop deck.

  4. Has the Congress nothing to do?

  5. Regardless of the outcome of any Congressional action, I will continue to salute our flag!

  6. Nice feel-good exercise — is this how the DEM controlled Congress is going to show us how Patriotic they are????

What to REALLY show us how Patriotic you are Congress, for a start: Fund our troops, then SIT DOWN AND COLOR, let the commanders in the field command and led our troops.
Two: Wake up and realize that there are people in this world whose singular goal in life is to destroy the United States and kill as many of us as is possible.

  7. Ole_Sarge,

I think it will be a cold day in Hell before the Demofarts will do anything to help our Troops or understand what this country faces.

    ALLONS

  8. Congrats, to all the veterans now that their right has been recognized! You can legally salute the flag just now? Sheesh, Congress took a long long time, huh?

    • Thank you

  9. Being willing to take the consequences, I will be the one to determine my rights.

  10. As you might notice in my e-mail address I served with the 187th ARCT in korea and saluting the AMERICAN FLAG while in any form of clothes is and shall remain my right that I fought for,I am not aware if congress has passed this pleas let me know

  11. I have a question for you-all…Is it permissable for a civilian to salute a soldier?

    • I would like to hear from others on this issue… if you have not served then please shake the hand of those who do and thank them for what they do for you. We would all be proud to have you as a brother or sister in arms if you care to join us and then we will all salute you, otherwise please remember that the few have always sacrificed for the many and leave us what few honors we have.

  13. If I remember correctly the uniform code of military justice requires all enlisted persons to salute an officer as a courtesy. It also required all military members to salute the raising and lowering of the flag, in uniform with a hand salute and out of uniform, hand over the heart. I don’t recall anything restricting a member of the military from rendering a hand salute. When I took my oath to my country there was no end date. We were taught in basic training ” when in doubt whip it out ” . Please, salute your flag, our military and all who serve our wonderful country and remember we are the one percent who serve….
