Head over to Eighty Deuce’s place and read the story of Charlie, a dog in which Eighty has grown very close to. He could use a bit of help contacting Military Mascots to help get Charlie to the States. Their website isn’t exactly working at this moment in time, though. You investigative types mind lending your skills to Eighty? I know he would appreciate it and you’ll get a thank you from me, too.
Oh, and read the entire article about the demon dog while there. I laughed very loud multiple times while reading. Eighty, you’re getting put on the List of the Permanently Cool, even if you jumped on the sandbag wall like a woman would jump on a table when seeing a mouse.

I was recently asked by someone if I knew how to get a mascot of the canine persuasion back to the US from Iraq and I suspect this is the same mascot. I did some research and provided them with some information and a website, which I’m hoping will enable them to get him back with them. Though he will probably have to stay in quarantine for a time, they should be able to get him back to the US, if the information I found is correct.

What Terri said is correct. I brought 2 small dogs back from Germany. But the US accepts German Vet docs. Cost of return was $600.00. No quarantine required. Getting Charlie to the US will cost more. He will need shots and quarantine for up to 6 months.

The dog does NOT need a quarantine. He just needs to be rabies vaccinated longer than 30 days with proof. contact Bonnie Buckley at Military Mascots and she can advise you properly!

First off I want to thank you for mentioning this on your site. I can definately use all the help I can get. 2nd I’d like to thank you for laughing (like so many) at my near death experience! haha
but to those responding here, I’ve tried contacting Military Mascots. Their website is down now and I’ve sent 2 emails with no response. We still have some time, but I dont know how long the process takes and all that so I’m trying to get something going asap. thanks to all the advice and help. I greately appreciate it!

Airborneparainf82,
Have looked up some intel on your problem on bringing Charlie back. The main hold back will be a rabie shot. The shot can not be older then 12 months but has to be administered at least 30 days before return. A VET has to certify this. Charlie may have to go through an exam on entry by a VET at your cost.
I have found PDF files and links for you but I can not post these here.
The Board Members have access to my email address and I give them permission to provide it to you so I can provide this intel.

Sgt Thompson,
Airborneparainf82 has access to the rabies shots at his AO. Maybe he could help you out on that one. But so far I have had no luck getting around the Regs. Still working on it but have found little support with the DOD. If both of you had access to a commericial airport this could be a done deal.

Allons,
I believe Baghdad International has a commercial terminal that I could possibly use. The canine in question with me has had his shots but they where of the unoficial under the counter variety. If I can find a way to get his shots on record I don’t think I will have allot of problems finding him a flight out of here.
Thanks for the response I have sent out 20 emails and post in two weeks and your the only person to respond.
ALLONS
SGT Thompson,
Need to hook you up with 82nd. He says he can get the shots and the doc’s required. But feels Baghdad is a no go. I don’t know. I am not there.
I have asked 82nd if I can provide his email to you. Waiting for his reply.
Hey board. You have my permission to provide my email address to SGT Thompson.
THANKS

Hey,
I got a dog back home in OIF I. If you can get it to Ali Al Salem or anywhere in Kuwait, contact Linda McLusckey. She is a vet In Kuwait and sent our pooch home. I am on the road right now but will try to find her contact info when I get home.
If you have other questions, email me: matt.robinson@navy.mil
Good luck and good on you for bringing the pooch home.

I work for a US-based animal welfare organization. We get requests from soldiers almost every week for assistance in bringing animals back to the States from bases in Iraq and Afghanistan (and from Kosovo!). We can only provide limited information at this time, but continue to campaign the DoD to start a small program – with our assistance – that would allow military personnel to bring their mascots home. So far, no luck. But we’ll keep trying.
During a routine web search on this subject, I came across this post. I would be interested to know how soldiers are getting their animals out of Iraq and if anyone can provide some more insight on how this is being done. Also, how open is the keeping of pets on bases and does it occur often? We have heard everything from commanding officers ordering the shooting of mascots, to sympathetic ones assisting with mascots’ trips to the US. We are just trying to get a little more insight in to this issue.
I know Military Mascots’ website has been taken down, and that was our strongest suggestion for inquiries on this subject.
Thanks for anything you all can provide.

We have sent money to pay pal to help bring Charlie home and all the other “pets” our military folks want to bring to the US — we just do not understand why the government or any other “powers that be” make it so very difficult for this to happen.
After all, they are US CITIZENS and, if they were here in the US where they belong, they would have the right to have as many pets as they could afford. Just having a dog to talk to sometimes helps us keep our sanity under very difficult circumstances. The SPCA International has this great program called Operation Baghdad Pups for getting your beloved pets home. They get several requests pet week. The best thing to do is to email them via the site. They’ve accepted my puppy into the program, but getting around Gen Order #1 is becoming a thorn in my side. Any help there? I just can’t imagine leaving my dog behind.
