A SOLDIER'S PERSPECTIVE
THE WEB'S LEADING MILITARY BLOG SINCE 2004
Because you are not going to believe what the Washington Compost is reporting, although their wording couldn’t be more tongue in cheek:
The U.S. military believes it has dealt devastating and perhaps irreversible blows to al-Qaeda in Iraq in recent months, leading some generals to advocate a declaration of victory over the group, which the Bush administration has long described as the most lethal U.S. adversary in Iraq.
This is good news because according to Osama bin Laden and other AQ leaders and facilitators Iraq is THE central front for their operations. They decided to make a point out of the conflict in Iraq and have expended great cost and effort into the region. And it failed. They have lost thousands of fighters at the hand of our brave warriors and through the diligent frustration of the Iraqi people used as pawns. Their plan has backfired and they are fighting the war from both sides, the civilian population turning away from them and the military troops firing at them.
There is widespread agreement that AQI has suffered major blows over the past three months. Among the indicators cited is a sharp drop in suicide bombings, the group’s signature attack, from more than 60 in January to around 30 a month since July. Captures and interrogations of AQI leaders over the summer had what a senior military intelligence official called a “cascade effect,” leading to other killings and captures. The flow of foreign fighters through Syria into Iraq has also diminished, although officials are unsure of the reason and are concerned that the broader al-Qaeda network may be diverting new recruits to Afghanistan and elsewhere.
This victory was brought to you by the men and women of the united states military and their fearless and unwavering Commander-In-Chief, George W. Bush. Had he listened to the idiotic calls to pull out from the left, we would not be hearing reporting of this sort. Remember when that feckless Harry Reid said “I believe this war is lost?” Eat crow senator!! We have been winning for quite some time. But now your own propaganda machines have no choice but to report on it.
Of course, the Compost is quick to slow down any optimism in our efforts:
[O]ther officials have cautioned against taking what they see as a premature step that could create strategic and political difficulties for the United States. Such a declaration could fuel criticism that the Iraq conflict has become a civil war in which U.S. combat forces should not be involved. At the same time, the intelligence community, and some in the military itself, worry about underestimating an enemy that has shown great resilience in the past.
The key is that they admitted success. Finally…

Great post Patriot. Sooner or later they all will have to admit what you and CJ have been saying all along. Men of courage and strength will always prevail over those with less fortitude. I thank God our military is the former and wish that our Congress and Senate as well as the left wing propaganda press were not the latter. Thanks to all who serve and protect our Freedoms and rights, even the rights of those who are feckless and lacking in fortitude. Lucky for them our Military fights for ALL Americans and not just the ones who believe in them.

Thanks Patriot for the post! It is indeed our military who are to be commended for the great success in Iraq and yes our president as well! Thanks for mentioning him Patriot.
Alot of the left wing people hate George Bush and all he stands for. I’m like you, I would hate to see Iraq now if our military had pulled out of there.

It great to hear the good news, although you’ll forgive me if I don’t celebrate yet. Terrorists are like roaches. You have to really squash them good in order to be sure you’ve got them.
But I have never had any doubt that or soldiers were doing a fine job in Iraq. The full effect may know be known for a number of years yet. That has certainly been true of past wars too. It’s only in hindsight of decades that we can philosophize about cause and effect.
Heck, I’m still waiting to see from what horrible disease Osama eventually dies. Who knows when we will know that.

Miriam, your observations are very wise as they always are. Thanks for the giggle about Osama! I too have wondered how long he can live with that bad kidney they keep sayin he’s been dying from!!
I think that Bush was right about not worrying about how history will judge him. I think he is a very smart man for understanding that. At this point in Clinton’s presidency all we heard about was how he was going to secure his legacy. It’s refreshing to have a President who doesn’t care about a hundred years from now, but is focused on what is going on NOW, and making sure the job actually gets done. Like him or not, agree with his politics or not. He is doing his job, like it or not.

Sue/Miriam, This reminds me of something the President said when I got to meet him a few weeks ago. He mentioned that he had just finished reading a new book about George Washington. “If they’re still writing books about #1, #43 doesn’t have anything to worry about.” He was talking about what people will think of him after he’s out of office. I was impressed by that.
