This is just despicable. Anyone see something wrong with this picture? Hint: he is the one who thinks his heart is in his crotch.

I am correct that that is the ever patriotic Mr Obama?? MMMM Wow!! How offensive!!
Chad
LOL!! I am laughing at your comment, not the disrepecting sucker running for President.
Carole
What a jerk! Fortunately, I hadn’t planned on voting for him anyway.
CriticalFacts
There is no statute that prescribes one must salute the flag in any particular way, and claiming that Obama is showing disrespect for the flag by standing as he is in the photograph is a whole lot of nothing.
It is George Bush who disrespects the flag each time he salutes it, and following Bush’s trashing of the flag in much of the world’s eyes, I cannot blame any one these days for not saluting the flag at every opportunity.

Oh, good Lord, CF. You’re really going to have to remove the “Facts” part of your name. Allow me to QUOTE from the United States Code, Title 36, Chapter 10 (otherwise known as the “Flag Code”), Paragraph 171:
During rendition of the national anthem when the flag is displayed, all present except those in uniform should stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. Men not in uniform should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Persons in uniform should render the military salute at the first note of the anthem and retain this position until the last note. When the flag is not displayed, those present should face toward the music and act in the same manner they would if the flag were displayed there.
The quote under the Time photo states: Senator Barack Obama, Governor Bill Richardson, Senator Hillary Clinton and Ruth Harkin stand during the national anthem. It also appalls me that you would let ONE individual (in your case George Bush) affect your desire to salute the flag. George Bush is NOT America. He is NOT the American flag. He is the President of the United States only. He will come and go, the flag will always be there as a symbol of freedom and as a standard bearer of leadership in the world community.
SSgtJ
This is the same Senator who would be President of these United States of America, who no longer wears a flag lapel pin. Seems that would be phoney patriotism. Yeh, right!
CJ, thanks for printing the TRUE FACTS on this.
CF, everything is about George Bush to you isn’t it?
I still love my country and don’t think there is a better one out there. Which country do you think is better?
CriticalFacts
The statute uses the term “should,” which does not require or prescribe any particular behavior. Were the statute to use the term “shall,” then I would agree with you, CJ. Personally, I have always saluted the flag as the statute suggests, but a fair read of the express language of the statute does not require me or anyone else to do so.
Topsail
Critical fact? Come on, this is really Obama isn’t it? No one else would be that dumb to think people don’t know better and should believe someone with ‘fact’ in their name.
No there is not a statute, and yes, it does say ‘should.’ Why? Because we force no one to love and respect our country. So if Obama chooses not to respect our flag and our country (which his wife made it quite clear she’s never been proud of the USA), then that’s his choice. BUT! While there is no specific ordanance or statute there is an etiquette, which is, was, and has been, ignored by obama and his wife.
Bush did some things I’m not pleased about, but he had more respect and love for this country, the flag and the people, than obama could ever hope to have. A person who is as big a narcisist as obama can’t see past their own reflection. The man is a cheat, a liar, racist, treasonous, unAmerican bastard and a total shame to this country and her citizens. Stop making excuses for the pompous ass and open your eyes to what he truly is! If you still don’t know, that would be the worst thing that has happened to this country in a century! That would be since Wilson, another socialist regressive. The man is destroying this great country and using loopholes in the law to cram his agenda down the throats of everyone whether they want it or not. THAT in case you didn’t know, is NOT the American way! 26 states are suing the federal govt! TWENTY SIX! Obama caused that division, no one else. Obama is responsible for turning people against the federal govt, no one else! He should be tried for treason and thrown in jail for the rest of his life, or better yet, put him on the front line in Afghanistan and find out what it’s like to be sent there without proper support!
David
Like so many americans… perhaps we should change our traditions?
Faith
Since the flag was displayed shouldn’t they have turned towards that rather than the music? We always did at West Point.
Lauren
It all has to do with respect as far as I am concerned and Obama has none for this country.
sealpatriot
Really, George Bush saluting the flag is disrespectful. I guess when I sign for the navy, then I won’t salute my military officers since it would be disrespectful to act like Bush. Anyway, why is it that Bush’s salutes are disrespectful? The meaning of the salute is very conotative, it depends on the person for the symbolic definition of a salute. In Iraq, the Iraqis pay respect to the foreign troops with the hand over their chest and bow their chin down breifly after they have been done a favor for or the soldiers are leaving when they secure a neighborhood. That is their conotative meaning to a symbolic expression of respect. For CJ, Marcus, and Me, it is the salute and since the president does it(and Hillary Clinton, Bill Clinton, John Kerry, General Peter Pace and so on), I guess I am in pretty good company. However, I am not in good company in this thread since you are here bastardizing the topic and launching personal attacks on your ideological enemies. Besides, I have school work to do so good bye and good ridance!
sue
Ah, here we have the “it depends on what the definition of ‘is’ is” all over again!! How Clintonesque!! Thank you CJ for the explanation. Thanks CF for the joke!!
JD
There was a bill passed on 25 July 07, that clarifies what veterans or service members that are not in uniform should do, salute or hand over heart. It allows veterans and service members in civilian attire to salute. Last I read Bush is a veteran, so why is it disrespectful for him to salute the flag. I still do and I have not been in the military for 3 years now.
CriticalFacts
Sorry, sue, but ask any constitutional or government lawyer (or anyone versed in the English language for that matter) and they will provide the exact same analysis. There is no joke or Clintonesque definition about it.

CF said: “The statute uses the term “should,” which does not require or prescribe any particular behavior.”
So, Obama chose NOT to do the respectful thing that the statute says he “should” have done. This is a guy that “should” live up to the United States code if he “expects” to become President. Therefore, Patriot is not incorrect that he is being disrespectful to this country’s flag and national anthem. I want a President who will respect those things. I shutter to say it, but in this instance my vote to Hillary (*shutter). What you are telling me is that the only way that Obama would respect our flag is if he were forced to do so – which is contrary to the freedoms I’m wearing the uniform to defend. Obama is free not to salute the flag or contradict the US Code. That doesn’t make him right. He is not required, but the code DOES prescribe a correct method.
JD, I’m assuming there was another flag flying in the direction everyone else was looking. But, I don’t know.
Sharon
He is picking a rather disrespectful way to distinguish himself from Hillary Clinton. CF, he is not legally required to assist a victim on whom a crime is being perpetrated either.

Hmmm: If someone like me swiftly put his 11 1/2 wide right up his (Obama’s) third point of contact, I bet he’d know what to do next time for the national anthem–eh?

When the code says that he “should” treat the flag with respect just means he won’t be thrown in jail for disrespecting the flag. However, the rest of us are free to think of him as he has shown himself to be…disrespectful of the flag and the country it stands for…which get’s people’s ire up. And they also have every right to express their opinion of his conduct and convince others not to vote for him. Which is, I believe, all this post is about.

I have to say, that when Barak first leapt into the political scene, his message was inspiring. But he has run for President way too soon, without the seasoning one needs as a statesman. He lit up the screen over on Charlie Rose… made Charlie even seem ten years younger. It was easy to overlook that what he had was ideas, not plans. And it shows up now.
He keeps screwing up over the simplest things: wearing a flag pin, not saluting, saying dumb things.
In short, he misses the boat too frequently because he puts the ME before the US. He’s not ready to run for President, now –or never. He’s shown himself to be more a politician than statesman, and that’s a shame.
Ah well. NEXT!
Erin
I think that Obama is a dangerous man, given his upbringing as a Radical Muslum (same as those we are fighting right now), his lack of patriotism, and his inability to tell the truth. He is running for President claiming that he is CHRISTIAN! He who refused to swear in as a Senator with the Bible! I think he’s an insider for our enemy. I think he is ABSOLUTELY the wrong person to put into office.

CriticalFacts, the word “should” is used because this is not law. If Obama burned the flag would you defend that as appropriate behavior as there is no law against it? You are correct, we are not required by law to salute the flag, but we SHOULD. A person running for president that purposefully refuses to do what SHOULD be done to respect the country for which he wishes to be president is not worthy of becoming president! Why should we respect someone who refuses to show respect to our and his country’s flag?
