A SOLDIER'S PERSPECTIVE
THE WEB'S LEADING MILITARY BLOG SINCE 2004
I was sent this link to a FoxNews.com story:
NBC has nixed holiday advertisements meant to thank troops for serving overseas in opposition to the inclusion of a non-profit’s Web address.
The ads, paid for by the non-profit Freedom’s Watch, are a simple thank you, the group says, with people shown paying gratitude to members of the military and the final frame showing the group’s Web address, www.freedomswatch.org.
NBC doesn’t want to look bad so they tried to explain:
Speaking with FOX on Friday, Wurtzel said NBC has no problem with the content of the ad, specifically the well-wishes to troops.
However, he said, the link to the website violates their policy on controversial issue advertising because it encourages political action and other activities. He said the policy is applied consistently across the board and this group was not targeted in any way.
I’m sorry. When did thanking the troops become a “controversial issue”? Can anyone really explain this to me? I thought EVERYONE supported the troops, “just not the war”. Our Soldiers bust their tails on a daily basis, working in austere locations, barely sleeping, no days off, and never able to relax. Yet NBC thinks that telling them “thank you” for what they do is just to risque and politically insensitive. They should be ashamed and owe every Soldier an apology…AND a thank you!

I hate how all these news people are only pushing their own agenda instead of doing anything useful. I support the war but even if I did not, I don’t see anything wrong with thanking the troops as you said.

I wonder if that means we won’t see any moveon.org commercials on NBC during the presidential election. Or any political ads at all for that matter. Their statement is rediculous. Any ad by any political candidate encourages political action, much more so than these ads.

Ummmm, CJ, you were EVER so much more polite than I was. hahahaha I resorted to base name-calling with NBC. But you know what? I feel better for having done it!!!
I was shocked because of that exact same line. How can thanking troops be a controversial issue?!? I did go to freedomswatch.org and they are very specific that they are a conservative group who lobbies for conservative causes. But I’ve seen the Red Cross do thank yous like that or local tv stations or all manner of commercials and end of broadcast “fillers” with thank yous to the troops during the holidays. It’s been that way since the FIRST Gulf War. But NBC is being a political advocate of its own by refusing to air the ad.
I will NEVER watch NBC again. NEVER, EVER, EVER.

Yes, NBC should be ashamed and they should apologize to all of the troops! This is just appalling !

And now it seems they’ve “changed their minds”. Go figure!
As reported by Fox. How funny is that? OK, maybe I just appreciate sick humor

Amen! I agree with you a 100%. As a former Marine I admire your blog. I have a blog but it’s of a religious nature. Maybe we can exchange links. I think my patriotic readers would enjoy yours.
Keep the good fight.
Keep blogging.
Blessings,
Lance
