Pakistan’s opposition leader against President Pervez Musharraf, Benazir Bhutto, was killed today by Muslim extremists most likely angered by her close ties to the United States and a critic of the Musharraf presidency.

This is just one more incident in a long string of incidents that highlight the need to track, find, and kill all extremist terrorists in the Middle East. Musharraf is far from the right answer or anything close to it. Shortly after her death, President Bush released a statement with good intentions, but included the following:

The United States strongly condemns this cowardly act by murderous extremists who are trying to undermine Pakistan’s democracy. Those who committed this crime must be brought to justice.

The thing that strikes me as absurd about this statement is that Pakistan is far from being a “democracy”. Musharraf is playing both hands in the war on terrorism. I strongly believe that we’d have killed or captured bin Laden by now had it not been or the incompetence of the Musharraf regime. But that’s just my opinion.

The prospect of prosperity in Pakistan were hindered today with Bhutto’s death. Score one for Islamic extremists. But, they better not get too comfortable – we’re coming for you!!

  2. Pakistan does worry me. It sounds like another breeding ground for these extremists. I agree CJ, that the Pakistani government is not a democracy. I sure hope that Musharraf didn’t have anything to do with this assasination. He is playing both sides to keep his power. He has been a hinderance in getting Bin-Laden I’m sure! Hope things change for the better over there soon!

  3. Definitely NOT a good situation. Wasn’t such a great one before the sad events of today. Definitely saying extra prayers for our military personnel in Pakistan right now and those along the borders in Afghanistan. Normally by this time of year the fire fights in the Hindu Kush have subsided quite a bit but not this year. I certainly hope this doesn’t ramp those up even more.
