A SOLDIER'S PERSPECTIVE
THE WEB'S LEADING MILITARY BLOG SINCE 2004
Every Soldier that deploys to a combat zone is going to have his/her own experience. Every unit is going to have a different mission. Some of those missions are glamorous and some are just plain snooze-worthy. Brandon Friedman and Marcus Luttrell deployed to the same country and came away with very different experiences.
However, I’ll tell you up front I’m biased against Brandon Friedman because of his association with Votevets.org, an organization that purports to be a non-partisan organization for veterans. Yet, a look at the “Our Candidates” link on their site will reveal a list of Democratic Candidates!!
Anyway, I’m not feeling well, so I won’t go into great detail. If you missed the them on C-SPAN, you can watch the streaming video now. And, I’m sorry, but Brandon just comes across as a whiny Lieutenant. And, well, Marcus Luttrell is a fellow Texan!! Probably drinks Big Red too!!

I spent the hour to watch this video and will probably watch it again. Marcus in incredibly engaging and endearing. Definitely an American on my list of “Who I’d like to Meet Someday.” I read his book months ago and have read parts of it many times. If you haven’t read it – what are you waiting for? I couldn’t put it down. He’s a fantastic story teller. More importantly his story, and the story of Seal Team 10 as well as all of the rescuers who gave their lives in the Hindu Kush is heartbreaking, touching and poignant in many ways.

Just so you know, Freidman is a texan too.
