A SOLDIER'S PERSPECTIVE
THE WEB'S LEADING MILITARY BLOG SINCE 2004
This was sent to me by one of our readers. He/she poses some great questions and I’d like to open them up to the floor from all sides.
Just hope this thought would stir up some good critical thinking and maybe an idea for your next post. Anyway, it is about progress being made in Iraq. Why do anti-war activists constantly claim that Iraq isn’t progressing fast enough and we should set a time table for withdrawal from that country? Wouldn’t this lead to worse results and possibly worse than more terrorism, another Saddam Hussein? Or maybe not another Hussein, maybe Iran’s Ayatollah and Mahmoud Ahmedinejad will take over using Iraq’s already dreadful hazards that were put in place by the Ba’ath regime against them (Yes, I think Saddam’s Actions still affect them right now)? Wouldn’t this damage National Security as they claim Bush has done even though we know that terrorists around the globe are the cause for why have to constantly reshape our Homeland Security Programs and Policies 24 hours and 7 days a week just to make sure that another terror attack doesn’t become successful?
According to Lt. Col. Buzz Patterson, all 18 provinces of Iraq have an average of 3 Battalions and that consists of more than one company each. If a company has about a hundred people in it, how is Iraq not progressing as we would like? How would we like them to progress if such a large proportion of their communities are serving to fill up three battalions isn’t good enough? Most of those Iraqis can disable bombs, speak English even though some are broken, and can shoot straight. How is this not good enough, and how are we losing when the enemy isn’t winning? Define losing and winning, in politics you have to otherwise your opponents disgrace and deplore you but we are not politicians. We are brothers and sisters of those Soldiers because they are our fellow countrymen. So we can be honest without having to force each other into saying what we believe is winning and losing. War is not a winning or losing game. You fight to protect and survive. That is the nature of war. A concept most of our politicians do not understand or care about. Nor do the partisan elites in the general public. Well, I think we ought to tell them to learn it.
Here’s my take. The anti-war activists CAN’T lose. They refuse to admit that we ARE winning and that things are looking up. It’s devastating to their cause and the sources of their money. If they continue to make it look like we’re losing, or that we’re not winning as fast as we should be, they would lose followers and contributors. Besides, war is no longer about winning or losing. War is a game to politicians and the Soldiers are the pawns used to win office and switch control of the presidency or Congress from Republican to Democrat. They are invested in failure and no one wants to lose their investment.

There are many things I just cannot find a way to understand no matter how much I try. This partisanship and winning versus losing and politicians “fighting” wars confounds me. No matter how much I may TRY to have a civil discussion about this with someone who refuses to “see the forrest for the trees” it nevers seems to happen. No matter how many times I may say, “I’m not a Democrat OR a Republican – never been a member of any party – I’m and American” or “No I DON’T agree with every decision President Bush OR Congress have made” the liberal “I’ll die aligned to my party types” REFUSE to have any level of open dialog.
Grown men and women who would rather live and die by their party’s line than to give a perceived inch to another party. How bloody adult and realistic is that?
I really like what DJ Drummond had to say in a post yesterday with respect to war. You can read his post at this link http://wizbangblog.com/content/2008/01/06/the-fog-of-politics.php.
When it comes to the issue of terrorism, of standing up against it, of fighting against those who consider us “non believers” as infidels and, therefore, those who should either be forced to submit or die, I guess it’s just way out of my scope of comprehension that any educated person (OK, ANY PERSON) can deny what would happen if we gave up and walked away from the fight. Am I missing something here? Haven’t the radical Islamist CLEARLY stated and in many instances CLEARLY shown their intentions? Haven’t they?
And finally – about politicians fighting wars. Holy Cow! They can’t even run our nation. How do they possibly think they can fight a war. Hold on! Hold on! I’m NOT suggesting they should. NOT AT ALL! I’m just asking them why in the heck they think they should even TRY? I doubt anyone in any country would argue that our military is the BEST in the world. Sadly those who “can” continue to restrict our military and, thus, created so many of the problems we see in the current wars we are engaged in.
To me so many of the “answers” are clear and easy to discern and change could be imposed immediately in many situations. Sadly power hungry, egotistical, self serving men and women with no true grasp on humanity continue to be allowed to weaken our nation and put us and future generations in danger each day.

Thanks for posting that, CJ. I will give that plenty of more thought to enlighten my day.

Leta, my thoughts exactly. I can’t count the number of times I have tried to get someone, ANYONE to explain this to me! The only thing that I can find is what CJ said above, they (the dems) are vested in defeat. And apparently, they don’t care who dies or suffers in order to insure that defeat.
It doesn’t matter if I go to left wing sites or right wing sites. If I write my Republican or my Democratic Senator, none of them can (or will) explain this to me. I just saw another article by a PHD at a local College who is blaming the Media for backing Bush’s war. She seems to think if we just impeached Bush and Chaney, then withdrew from Iraq, then the whole world would just get along. Wish it were so easy …
What reasonable person actually thinks that the Iraqie people were prospering under the old ‘sanctions’? Clearly we could not have just let the sanctions run on and on with no end in sight. At least now, the Iraqie people will have a chance to prosper if we let them. Do any ‘dems’ really think Iraq and the world will be better off under Iran? Is that Jimmy Carter’s plan (to turn Iraq over to his good buddy Iran)?
By the way, the 1st link you provided is awesome. Haven’t made it to the 2nd one yet.

SSgtJ, I sometimes feel the same way. After all, any good news out of Iraq could possibly be the final nail in the coffin for far left democrats.
