I lived in the city next to this before moving to Savannah where I live and go to college. The city is also known for another great thing. Kennesaw reportedly has the lowest crime rate per capita of any city in the U.S. Why might you ask? Well, some blame a law passed years ago requiring every household within the city limits to own a gun. Now of course they don’t enforce such a measure but you can imagine being a thief this sure would make you think twice. God bless Kennesaw, GA

If parents don’t want their children to become Marines, they can talk to their children. Infringing on the Marine’s rights to free speech isn’t the right way. Besides, when a child becomes an adult, their parents shouldn’t have control over their lives any more. That’s what being an adult means…being responsible for yourself and your own decisions.

My father may not like guns, so I may not rush out to buy one. But if I decide to, there isn’t anything he can do to stop me. If I make a decision I later regret, it’s my responsibility…not the bank’s, not the Marines’, not the government’s, not my parents’. The buck stops here when it comes to my life. And that’s they way it should be for everyone.

In the 1990s Clinton decimated our military and slashed budgets and personnel in human intelligence (and really the entire intelligence community). He called this a “peace dividend”. As a result, we were unable to prevent 9/11 from happening. Let me throw a question back at you here: did “non violent means to effect change” prevent the deaths of almost 3000 innocent Americans? No.

I hate to say it, but I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – anyone joining the military with the belief they will avoid combat is naive at best, a complete moron at worst. Let’s see. The country is at war. The military’s job is to fight wars. The military is staffed by men and women. What would possibly give your best friend that idea.

The people of Berkeley are not “keeping their kids from being deployed to Iraq”. They are infringing on free speech. They are effectively saying it’s okay be oppose the war and the troops, but it’s not okay to support them. The Marines are not allowed their freedom of speech that they sacrifice so much to protect to tell people about the honor of serving this country. Unlike Berkeley, I try not to stifle free speech, so of course your comment is approved.

I do agree that people from all walks of life have shaped this country. But, please tell me who defeated the Japanese to ensure our freedoms? Who defeated the Germans to prevent the spread of dangerous communism and ethnic cleansing? Was it Code Pink or their predecessors? Was it Berkeley’s liberal professors or students? No.

I am guessing my comment won’t be posted- but we shall see… I have thought a lot about this and being patriotic does not just mean waving a flag or being a soldier. The freedoms we enjoy in this country do not exist solely because of a standing military- individuals and groups of citizens have engaged themselves and fought for their rights too. The American story is just as much shaped by the people in this country that have used non violent means to effect change.
And my best friend enlisted straight from highschool, was told she would not see combat (partly because she was a mechanic and partly because she was a woman), was sent to Iraq, and within days her mechanic unit was deployed as combat. If the people of Berkeley want to keep their kids from being deployed to Iraq who are we to stop them? It is a staple of republican values to let each state and city govern themselves. That is what Berkeley is doing.

Good Post .
My suggestion is that every U.S, vet flies ‘Ol Glory every day until the war is over, no matter what country they may live. After 9-11-2001 there were so many U.S.
flags waving in front of homes in Ireland. Today it has dwindled. I’ve always fown mine since 9-11.

Thank you for posting Kennesaw’s resolution formulated in response to Berkley’s disgraceful treatment of America’s finest who place their lives on the line to protect us (including ungrateful Berkley council folks).
i sent a thank you to each, Mayor Giles, Council member Jenkins and Council member Thrash.
Reading Kennesaw’s Resolution 2008-07, 2008 gives me goosebumps and a great heart-warmth. Yep! America – Land of the Free because of the Brave!
Thanks again to Seamus, Marcus, and all responsible for relating the incidents.
