Well, here it is. The USS New York! I am proud to have been a small part of the building of this gereat ship, by hauling some of the steel.

USS New York Is Christened
It’s a living, fighting monument to the dead of 9/11. The USS New York, constructed of steel from the World Trade Center site, was christened in a New Orleans ceremony.

  1. I read something about this that neither Senator from New York would even be bothered to show up at the ceremony and they had a hard time getting ANYONE to attend of “political” importance. If that’s the case I find it appalling. The New York is a fitting tribute to all those brave souls who died and all the warriors who worked tirelessly to help in the effort after 9/11. Thanks CJ for posting a pic of this beautiful lady.

  2. What a wonderful tribute to all of those who were killed on 9/11 ! Their memory will live on in the USS New York! A fine ship!!

  3. Donna, I truly agree with you, I believe the USS New York will serve this Great Country well. This is more than I can say for our politicians. “Miss Ladybug” and “White Rose” wrote an outstanding commentary prior to this event. It was posted on 26 Feb 2008 as “No Love for New York.” I said my piece at that time, I will not go there again. There are certain landmarks in lifewhich show us the true honor or character of a man or woman. This event was one of those times. If they truly believed 9/11/2001 was as truly important as they constantly said, these politicians would have been there NO EXCUSES. Secretary Gates would be the only one who might get a pass. Sue, I don’t be disrespectful to you. It was both sides. Take some time and go back to that post.

  4. Grumpy, I gave no one a pass on this from either side so I don’t know what you are talking about. I find it disgusting that the two Senators from New York, who do both happen to be Democrats, which is not an issue as far as I’m concerned, couldn’t find time in their schedules to be at something so important and significant for New York. They both were out there with their gums flapping big time when 9/11 happened. I think they, more than any other politicians should have been there. And Secretary Gates does get the pass because he was there. His wife was also sponsoring the affair. I don’t know what the sleeping arrangements would have been for him had he not. I wasn’t being “political” for either side, merely voicing my disgust at the lack of respect shown by all of them.

  5. From NY POST:
    A FIGHTING 9/11 TRIBUTE

March 1, 2008 — Say this for the US Navy: It knows how to remember.

Consider USS New York, the Navy’s newest amphibious transport dock ship, to be christened this morning during a ceremony at the Northrop Grumman shipyards in New Orleans.

The ship, named in commemoration of the victims of 9/11, was forged in part from 7.5 tons of steel salvaged from the wreckage of the World Trade Center – used, as the Navy puts it, to symbolize “the spirit and resiliency of the people of New York.”

    Her motto: “Never Forget.”

It’s hard to think of a better tribute to the heroes of that day than New York, which can transport up to 800 Marines in support of expeditionary warfare missions and special ops – perfect, in other words, for taking the fight back to America’s enemies.

And she’ll be skippered, upon her commissioning next year, by Cmdr. F. Curtis Jones of upstate Binghamton, at the head of a crew of 360 sailors.

Like we said: wholly fitting (as are two more planned San Antonio-class transports, USS Arlington and USS Somerset – named for the sites of the other 9/11 attacks).

Indeed, for decades to come, the US fleet will sail with a physical manifestation of the plain American courage that makes her sailors the finest in the world – and a firm reminder, as if they needed it, of the stakes of their service.

    Anchors aweigh!

  6. Sue, I stand CORRECTED! Well done. My real point is this, there are 2 people who have absolutely NO REASON for not being there. This actually reflects poorly on their character. These 2 people are George W. Bush and Richard Cheney, specifically. I can ony give you my opinion, you claim that you are not being political. It surely appeared to me that you were being political. Sue, on this issue, I stand CORRECTED, on your views! BUT MY VIEWS ON GEORGE W. BUSH AND RICHARD CHENEY HAVE AND WILL NOT CHANGE. Both Democrats and Republicans have said and done things which I seriously disagree. Politically, I am an independent and have voted that way for the last 40 years.

  7. Grumpy, still not seein where you think I was being political. I merely expressed disgust at the lack of interest by ANYONE of “political importance”. I specified the two Senators from New York, obviously because it is THEIR state and both were so vocal about 9/11. I don’t know where you live but I am about 30 miles from ground zero so I had Chuck Schummer and Hillary Clinton out the wazoo over 9/11 and all their bluster and BS. Obviously all BS if they can’t be bothered to show up for the Christening of the ship dedicated to the memory of the heroes and victims of 9/11. They sicken me with this display of gross hypocrisy. And watching their performances in the Senate I would say neither is a friend of the Military either. I do agree that the President or at the very least the Vice President should have been present at such an event. This was a tragedy of political incorrectness all the way around no matter how you look at it or which side you are on. It’s also a tragedy for all of us as Americans when no member of our leadership will acknowledge such an event with their presence.

But when it comes to the military and what happened on 9/11, its personal and not political for me. I hope that makes sense to you.

  8. And Thom, great post!! Thank you for the beautiful words as always!!

  9. Sue,

The issue is closed. You have the right to your opinion. There is NO SHORTAGE OF BS ON BOTH SIDES AND IT IS RECOGNIZED AS THE SAME.

  10. Shame on NYC and its’ political leaders….if they even warrant the name leader…what liers and fakes they are. They are failures in both action and words!
The political leadership of New York basically ignored the christening of the USS New York a naval warship ship made of 7.5 tons of steel from the WTC. Invitations were sent to all relevant politicians and only one showed up! What a disgrace insult and embarrassment. Where was the mayor, where was the governor? What happened to Giuliani, Hillary, Bloomberg, Pataki, Spitzer, Schumar and President Bush? Of course the always reliable & dedicated NYPD & FDNY showed up and bless them because they are all we citizens can count on in this city. Obviously the politicians went back to sleep and forgot what happened and it’s back to business as usual. Politicians and their speeches just come & go like the weather. If only more then one of them had the integrity and self respect to pay tribute at this christening. What a sad day to see the true character of our so called leadership and our news media. They both failed as usual!.
