It was a tiny one room flat and he barely had enough money, he had to rely on welfare services and also had a grandchild (one year younger than me) to look after. He could only speak Malay so I had to talk through my friend to him. It was only after I asked about a old combat knife I found lying on a table that he said he fought against the Jap in WW2. It is a sad state that some vets are in, seeing as they have given so much and never expected anything grand in return but yet, they are not even given the basics. As Col. Hunt said, "If a nation cannot even look after the people who have risked their lives for our freedom, we are not even fit to be called a country".
