A SOLDIER'S PERSPECTIVE
THE WEB'S LEADING MILITARY BLOG SINCE 2004
I say this with a grain of salt because every troop is more than a number and you tell the families of those 19 that it doesn’t mean anything! Troop deaths dropped to the lowest numbers since the war began in May – to 19. This is reflective of the crushing defeat Al Qaeda, the insurgency, and Al Sadr’s followers have suffered since the successful “surge” brought the chaotic streets of Baghdad and other cities in Iraq under control, allowing the Iraqi military and police forces to bring order back.
Additionally, Iraq is pumping more oil, which further strengthens their economy and gives the government much needed money for domestic improvements.
Oil Minister Hussein al-Shahristani told Reuters in an interview that the improved security had helped Iraq, which has the world’s third-largest oil reserves, raise oil production to a post-war high of 2.5 million barrels per day in May.
Iraq’s oil industry, hit by decades of sanctions, war and neglect, was a vulnerable target for saboteurs after the U.S. invasion. Attacks on pipelines quickly destroyed any hopes of using Iraq’s vast oil reserves to fund its reconstruction.
The military says violence in Iraq is now at a four-year low following crackdowns by U.S. and Iraqi forces on Shi’ite militias in southern Basra and Baghdad and on al Qaeda in the northern city of Mosul, its last major urban stronghold.
“In May we have exceeded for the first time a 2 million barrels per day export rate. In production we have exceeded 2.5 million bpd,” Shahristani said.
The number of Iraqi civilians killed in May also fell, to 505, after reaching a seven-month high of 968 in April, figures compiled by the interior, defence and health ministries showed.
Any day now Clinton, Obama, and/or McCain will come out and hail these successes and give the President credit for these successes just as they’ve blamed him for the failures!! I just won’t hold my breath waiting…

I am sure Code Pink will have trouble with this news just like the MSM will. As for anyone giving President Bush credit for anything that has happened in Iraq over the last year. Like we are winning! I think not.
I see the democrats in the Senate fighting General David Petraeus’s confirmation to Chief of Central Command, CENTCOM.
The democrats speak of Change. But they refuse to see real change.
Remember “This War Is Lost”
JD
You got that one correct, Grass Hopper, “Like we are winning! I think not.”
To say we are “winning” in Iraq is like saying the guy who steals money from little old ladies at knife-point is “making a living.”
The Grass Hopper
JD,
Read the entire post. The “I think not” was about the democrats. Hope this helps.
David
Shucks, the president doesn’t get the credit for this one…give the credit where its due…
Gen Patreus!
David
Donna
Yeah, people hate George Bush so much that they refuse to see any progress in Iraq whatsoever!

Grass Hopper: Why does it always have to be about politics? Why can we not view the Iraq debacle in non-partisan terms? Could it be that armed conflict is truly failed diplomacy? Could it be that a nation’s use of it’s military forces is nothing less than a political statement? Could it be that our Bush is a failed politician and a failed leader?
Peace and Semper Fi…

JD, why are you mad? Is it because you are not in the fight. Look at our history and then state your point. Take charge of you responsiblity and stop blaming the process. Be proud of what you have done and support the ones that are still in the fight. Forever “Green” “NAM” 68-72.

Welcome home JB. Did you really spend 4 years in Vietnam? Excatly how or why did you do that?
JD, most of us on here support the troops and the mission not the politicians. You appear to be the one still calling President Bush names.
David, I do give the credit to General Petraeus. In fact, the Dems should be out there taking credit for the changed policy in Iraq. Instead of they are still trying to undermine everything.

JD,
Read your own post. You ask why does it always have to be about Politics. But then you go into a Code Pink political rant.

General Petraeus has done a fantistic job. However it was G.W. Bush that ordered the surge.
