A SOLDIER'S PERSPECTIVE
THE WEB'S LEADING MILITARY BLOG SINCE 2004
Bella is getting to the age where she is learning to talk. She can say a few simple words, and like most kids her age, her favorite word is, “no.” She is old enough to understand that she has to stop doing what she is doing when Mommy or Daddy tells her no, but not old enough to understand how to use the word. That brings me to my first Kid’s Perspective post and the big laugh I got the other day.
I called Anna the other morning after PT and got to talk to Bella for a few minutes. It was mostly me talking to Bella with a lot of babbling on her end. The funny part of the conversation went a little like this.
Me: Bella, are you ready for Daddy to come home and see you?
Bella: No!
Me: *laughs* Okay, fine then! I’ll come home and see Mommy!
I don’t know why it tickled my funny bone so much for Bella to tell me no, but I laughed the rest of the day about it. Perhaps it has something to do with not seeing her since 5 May. Maybe it was because she is just so stinkin’ cute. So there you have it. Anyone else have funny stories of your really young kids telling you no? Share in the comments! Oh, and take a look under the fold for Bella’s monster face.

Grrr! Now give me goldfish crackers!

Marcus, she is adorable!!
“No” is cute when they are Bella’s age. Mostly because they are so sick of hearing it said to them, that they use the word with so much glee. However, but when my almost 9 year old said it to me the other day with the ugliest look on his face, it wasn’t so funny anymore! UGH. The pre-teen years are starting much earlier than they did when I was a kid!
Marine Dad
That’s our girl!
Dude, she is indeed the spittin’ image of you at that age.

I’ve got a funny video of Anissa telling me no when I was trying to sing the ABC song with her. Every time I started singing, she’d say: “NO!! Do it by myself!!” “By myself, Daddy!!” Of course she was about 3 or 4 at that time.
And tell me about it, Tracy. I fly off the deep end when my 10 or 12 year old says “no”, or just outright ignores my wife or me. They see my eyes get as big as dinner plates and the fires of hell raging within them and quickly realize the error of their ways – until the next time they do it!!
Miss Ladybug
I don’t have any “no” stories since I don’t have kids. And I don’t remember anything specific about when my sisters were little (I was 10 when the oldest of the two was born). Haven’t had to deal with it with my little second cousin (who’s 2) since I’m not around him ALL the time. I get to babysit his 7 month old brother this weekend, from Friday morning until Sunday afternoon. That will be a new experience for me… And, he’s teething…

Tracy is right,,she is adorable!
We just went through the “No” stage recently with my two year old great niece. “Fun” times! No funny stories about it though.
Thanks for filling me in on the ignoring stage CJ. I thought it was because the kiddo is male, not a teenager.
Good luck with the babysitting Miss Ladybug!
Anna
Bella saying “NO” is just the half of it. We can’t wait for Daddy to experience the look… It will be great!
Marcus
Meh, the look will have no effect on the Daddy. I am immune to the look.
