I found out yesterday afternoon at the end of holiday liberty formation that there are talks of evacuations for both the Air Station and Parris Island. I should find out what is going on sometime today or tomorrow once the storm gets closer to the States and the “cone of uncertainty” narrows a bit more.

I sat through a few hurricanes while stationed at Camp Lejeune, but they never talk about evacuations. I’m not exactly certain how all that will work, nor am I certain what military housing will require if we have to leave quick. I know I have special shutters for the windows on the ground level of the house so those will have to go up. Other than that I’ll have to dig out the guide they gave me when I moved in.

If we do have to leave, I’ll probably take the family west to Atlanta. It is outside the cone of uncertainty as of now, and a very good friend lives there. I haven’t seen her since I moved from Atlanta back to Arkansas during high school, so that would be the only plus side to this get up and leave deal.

I’m already forming plans in my head and the uncertainty is affecting my sleep. I write this at 0200 (I set this to publish later in the morning) and my head is churning out idea after idea and problem after problem. I know everything will be just fine in the end.

Anna did go shopping today and bought some extra drinking water, canned goods, and batteries. It seems no time was wasted in attacking Wal-Mart, though. Anna reported back that she got the last six gallons of water and the last pack of batteries. Canned goods were also picked over. The commissary was closed today, so we’ll have to visit them tomorrow for any remaining odds and ends. All of that will be in case we don’t evacuate.

I’ll post updates as I get more information.

  1. Good luck, Marcus. You and your family are in my prayers.

  2. Marcus, as someone who has had to work evacuations, as well as the aftermath of storms, make sure you take important papers with you. Things like insurance policies (especially if you have home or renter’s insurance), marriage license, birth certificates, car and home titles, and passports are all difficult to replace quickly and may be needed to address claims or other issues in the hurricane’s aftermath. It’s also a great idea to take a sampling of pictures or videos that are irreplacable. One of the saddest stories I ever heard was the young couple who lost a number of videos of a deceased child. They could never get them back, and no amount of claim or insurance money could make them whole. Anyway, it’s good to think about these things before hand and be ready to go on short notice. It’s guaranteed you won’t think about them when you’re ordered to leave. We always advised folks to keep a “go kit” in a plastic tub or waterproof container of some sort; with all the important things they needed to take, like some nonperishable food, extra medicines (absolutely essential), some hygene items (diapers, feminine products, baby wipes, hand sanitizer), some extra clothing, and those all-important documents. Good luck and hopefully the preparations won’t be needed!
