A SOLDIER'S PERSPECTIVE
THE WEB'S LEADING MILITARY BLOG SINCE 2004
If you missed the You Served podcast last night, you missed a great live interview with Scott Kesterson, who is embedded with troops in Afghanistan. We spoke about an article he wrote titled “The Other Side of Paradise” for the Huffington Post about Soldiers’ thoughts on the election. The article was the problem. But, the comments to the article are downright disrespectful and despicable:
From cardineau: Its amazing how all of these right wing military types think that because they are in a foreign war, their judgement is somehow superior to the millions of veterans who have “been there and done that”. Blindly supporting McCain because he is ex-military, is equivalent to support for another ex-military leader … Hitler in world war two.
From TRYKER This article shows how politicized the military has become. We do know that they accept low level intelligence as they are easily to train and lead. Add a little bit of the theology rampant in the right wing and you get soldiers all screwed up…and ready to return to Amurika to live alongside you and me.
From rbarthjr: F–k these politically ignorant racist pieces of s–t. Democracy requires a well-informed citizenry — of which the military is a part — and the election of Obama reflects that at least 52% of the US is a hell of a lot more informed than this tiny sample of presumably white officers.
Well, as one could guess, the Soldiers read Scott’s piece AND the comments. The response is a sad follow-up that Troy has over on Bouhammer.com. Here’s my favorite part of his article because it just literally causes my heart to skip a beat thinking about these young Soldiers having to make these choices and being condemned for them:
As I write this I find myself reflecting on an incident that happened in Dallas, Texas over a year ago. A man, drunk and lost, began banging on the door of a house late at night. He had apparently mistaken the house for another. The owner of the home felt threatened, and fired several times through the door, killing the drunken man on his front steps. No charges were fired; it was considered self-defense. A soldier in either of the war zones that would dare fire and kill someone in the same manner would be investigated and most probably charged with murder. We hold soldiers to a higher standard than we do ourselves, always quick to send them out to do the dirty work, always quick to condemn them when they fail to meet the standards of perfection that few if any citizen could meet themselves.

Well I completly agree with those comments! For someone to go and kill another human in a war for watever reason has to be brainwashed into belivng they are doing it for honor, country, patriotism or anywhere in the world.
Just how the sucide bombers do it, I really feel a soldiers perspective has to be limited. Because thats all a soldier has, imagine when a soldier realizes he went to iraq n thousands of innocents died by their bombs and weapons, for their government to rob the country of its resources.
We want change around the world and we hope Obama changes these ways.
Cheers,
Clyde

Clyde, just when I thought I’d seen the most arogant, uneducated, ignorant baffoon, you go and post and make me re-evaluate my formula. Obviously, you don’t understand the life of a Soldier or you wouldn’t make such cretinous remarks.

Bravo CJ!! Clyde, maybe your country isn’t worth fighting for, but THANK GOD we have amazing men and women like CJ and Marcus who believe in OUR country enough to fight for a better future and protect us from terrorists. And I would love to see your facts and figures as to all the resources you claim we raped Iraq for. Show me all the revenue that the US has reaped from freeing that country from tyranny. Show me how many barrels of oil are now promised to the US because of it. The oil contracts that were in place when we went in there, are still there. We got none of it. And as for the bodies piling up Clyde, you need to go check the stats on how many people were killed by those suicide bombers you compared our heroes to. What a disgustingly ignorant parallel.

Well said, CJ and Sue. I won’t comment on what Clyde had to say, because one thing the history of military service in my family is dignity…and I’m not sure I could maintain that dignity if I posted what I would like to say to him.
To Clyde, I’ll simply say that you, sir, are an absolute waste of oxygen, and I just wonder if you’d say the same thing about a member of your own family if they were serving in the military somewhere in Iraq.

Clyde said” For someone to go and kill another human in a war for whatever reason has to be brainwashed into believing they are doing it for honor, country, patriotism or anywhere in the world.”
Is that why some Iraq person or person, put an IED under the road and hid in hidden wall and set it off when my son’s vehicle passed killing him and his driver and wounding several other and then sent an RPG into the next vehicle burning four more American soldiers alive. it that why bad Iraqis pay each other $500.oo to create and set off those IED”s and RPG’s. and they do it to please their own god. How dare you say things like that to Our American Soldiers!!!!! I agree with SPACE “ou, sir, are an absolute waste of oxygen, and I just wonder if you’d say the same thing about a member of your own family if they were serving in the military somewhere in Iraq.” or even say it to someone in your country for you would be be headed.

Clde is one of those people that passes judgement and makes comments about things he knows nothing about. Unfortunately he benefits from soldiers who fight for this country. Life is not fair and neither is war. I am proud of and support anyone who fights for this country.Obama knows nothing, except to say change. He can’t or won’t say what change. My only hope is he starts the draft and takes Clyde. Now that would be change. Clyde is the one who is brain washed.
