A SOLDIER'S PERSPECTIVE
THE WEB'S LEADING MILITARY BLOG SINCE 2004
You know you’re a complete nerd when you get really excited about upgrading WordPress and when you’re done you get out of your chair and dance around the dining room. Yes, I really did that.
The upgrade didn’t take too long, and there wasn’t any trouble with uploading the new files and running the upgrade script, but. . .
Threaded comments were an epic failure. At first. I did get them working, so don’t be alarmed and feel bad that I went on and on about them earlier. More about that in a second. I also accidentally added Gravatar support so everyone make sure you are registered and have a Gravatar selected. I think I might be able to convince CJ to run a Gravatar contest if we all ask nicely enough.
Geek content follows so you can stop reading here if you like.
Well, thanks for reading the geek content. It makes me happy you’re willing to put on nerd glasses and snort along with me for a few minutes.
Okay, here is what happen with the threaded comments. I got all the WordPress files uploaded and when I took a look at the site, I didn’t see a way for us to reply to specific comments. Oh crap. Not good. Then it hit me like a ton of bricks. We are using a custom template that was released prior to the WordPress v2.7 update. It won’t have the needed code to support threaded comments!
I hit up the WordPress codex and did a search for the needed code to make everything work. I found it with ease and then started making changes to the code.
See, I know just enough about PHP and coding to get myself in trouble. The first try, I got in a LOT of trouble. I followed all the instructions and even looked at the code from the default theme comment file, but it just wasn’t working. I then had a stroke of genius. Use the file from the default template! I renamed the old file just in case I needed to go back to it and uploaded the new. After refreshing the page, all the links you’ll see when you click on the reply click worked, comments just didn’t thread. I was at a complete loss.
I then had my second stroke of genius of the night. The AJAX comments plug-in we use could be causing problems. I disabled the plug-in, refreshed the page again, and BAM! Everything works. That is also when I noticed the Gravatar next to my name. Whoa, talk about unexpected side affect! I like it though, so it stays!
I hope everyone enjoys the new features. I know I sure do.

So are you doing the Tom Cruise “Risky Business” dance or the Kevin Bacon dance from …(damn, I forgot the name of that movie)
Good work, Marine.

Marcus
I’d say Tom Cruise from “Risky Business.” Nothing like the socks and shirt dance. lol

Footloose…I remembered it…(the memory banks are still good, it’s the retrieval system that sucks.)

You lost me in the geekster stuff, but I’m glad you got it back up & running. Now, I’ll take it for a ride and see if I notice anything different (I usually don’t).

Thanks Marcus for all the hard work, we really appreciate you and CJ! I like the look of the new!
