I went into the field I’m in as a direct result of the 2000 terrorist attack against the USS Cole. In another sign that President Obama doesn’t understand the war against Islamic terrorism, charges against Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri have been dropped. This is part of his pledge to close the Guantanamo Bay Detention Center, but is a frightening pattern by Obama that he does not understand the stakes in America’s war against terrorism.
According to Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell, the decision was made “without prejudice”. This means that the US government may decide to prosecute him at a later time.
“He remains a detainee,” says Morrell. “It doesn’t change his status at all. He is going to remain confined until there is a determination at a later date as to what should happen to him.”
So, if that’s the case, why even drop the charges? Why not keep the charges against him and continue with the trial?
“All this really does is keep the Department [of Defense] in compliance with the President’s executive order halting all military commissions proceedings down at Guantanamo,” Morrell explained.
Instead of trying this murderous fiend and executing him as soon as possible (if found guilty), we’re going to pay to keep him alive even longer, spending money that would be better spent paying for Congress’s lavish retreats on taxpayer money during major economic problems.
Supposedly, President Obama will be meeting with the families of the victims of the USS Cole and 9/11 attacks later today. I’ll keep you posted.

Don’t forget to read beyond the headlines, folks. The charges will clearly be refiled.
You should be happy that Guantanamo is being cleaned up. It legitimizes our struggle against extremism.
For years, Guantanamo and Bush’s executive orders have been stains upon our nation’s honor. Let’s leave torture, unbound executive power, and flimsy civil liberties to the fundamentalists. Let Obama do his job.

I think the decision is form over substance. In other words, whether the charges stand or not means nothing of substance – the dude ain’t going anywhere soon.

The fact that the previous administration managed to let go detainees and they ended up on the battlefield is a very keen example of why the process needs to be reviewed. As in one of the statements, time to read the whole article, folks. Present charges are being dropped doesn’t mean that he is being released. Just that the kangaroo court that was trying to try him before suddenly got a real lawyer in charge.
As for the other comment about “Let Obama do his job”, please don’t belittle anyone into staying on the sidelines of this or any other administration. I voted for the guy and I’ll be the first to reccommend the boot should he deserve it. He’ll do his job and I’ll watch every move.
