Our school put the matter up to the Parent's Association and got it to be optional. The only complainers were the parents that don't come to the meetings.
I agree with Bob that there isn't much benefit at the public level for this. In NYC, I'd rather them focus on keeping weapons out of the school then what the kids wear.

I am against school uniforms in PUBLIC school in general.

My taxes pay for that school. My taxes pay for the school's personnel. I will send my kid dressed any way I want to. Of course, I'm going to send my kid there clean, and with decent clothes. After all, I do have some pride. But forcing me to buy specific clothing for something that I am BY LAW required to do (sending children to school is the law, after all), screams all kinds of rights violations in my head.

Private schools can have all the uniforms they want. After all, they're not publicly funded by my taxes.

CJ, if you had the time and ability, I would consider homeschooling. My sister has 5 kids that she's home schooled. Her oldest is now a freshman at Yale.
