Treason: the offense of acting to overthrow one’s government or to harm or kill its sovereign.
Sedition: incitement of discontent or rebellion against a government.

With those definitions in mind, watch the following video. The transcript (and translation of Spanish phrases) is below.

I wanna start off by saying that the young man who spoke a little while ago was one of my students. That made me so proud because I know that our people have strong leaders for years and years to come.

As a militante del union del barrio (*Neighborhood Union Militant or Fighter), a revolutionary Mexican organization here, we understand what [the person spoke earlier] is saying. You’re right – this is not just about Mexico. It’s about a global struggle against imperialism and capitalism. But, we know that all of that is happening within the context of where we now stand is stolen, occupied Mexico. [unintelligible]

And the message that we bring, is that we wanna bring a little bit more of a revolutionary context to this. Why is it that these people – these frail, racist, white people wanna keep us out of this country? It’s not because simply the color of our skin. It’s not simply because they want to exploit us. Let me tell you why.

Because on this planet, right now, are 6 billion people. At the forefront of the revolutionary movement is La Raza (*The Race), [unintelligible] of Venezuela. Well, you know, we have a long history and example of our comandante [*commander] Fidel Castro Rus?. Viva Hugo Chavez. Eva Morales. Viva Brazil, Ecuador, you name it. We have nine, NINE, left of center governments in Latin America right now and they know something that one young Argentine called Che Guevara said; it was called the Domino Theory and he knew that every single country would go revolutionary one after the other after the other after the other.

So, what do they fear? They know that every single country…they know that we no longer will fall to these lies called borders. We know that El Salvadoran and the Guatemalan and Nicaraguanse Americano (*Nicaraguan American)…there’s no damn difference, we are all one people. So, with that in mind, we see ourselves – all of us here – as the northern front of a Latin American Revolutionary Movement! There are more than 40 million of our people north of the Rio Grande. That means to them that there are 40 million potential revolutionaries north of the border inside the belly of the beast. So, when you think about why do they want to keep us, out of all people, out – that’s why! Because they know, that we now know the truth. They know that now we are La Raza; we’re professionals; we’re educators; we are revolutionary students.

What does that mean? We are not just a regular culture any more. We are a culture of revolutionary spirit and that’s the fear.

So, with that being said I want to leave you with this. As a revolutionary – and with revolutionary context – let’s be clear about one thing: our enemy is NOT the Minute Men. Quote me: “Our enemy is not the Minute Men.” Because the Minute Men are not the ones who have killed over 4,600 people at those borders. The…our enemy is the same enemy as Hugo Chavez…that Hugo Chavez has. Our enemy is the same enemy that keeps Africa poor. Our enemy is the same enemy that keeps Asia poor. Our enemy is capitalism and imperialism. Ok?

And I’ll finish with this. I’ll finish with this. If we are serious about making change. If you are serious about making change, let me tell you…The struggle will go on for many more years after we leave UCLA. Reading a book, or writing a book or teaching a class – that is not…that is NOT a part of the movement. What you do 24 hours a day as a professional revolutionary; that is what will lead our people and all people to liberation. Viva La Raza!

Did he just declare war on the United States? Can we now mobilize the troops? Why do I get the idea that the Minute Men would probably feel differently about what Santee H.S. “Social Studies” teacher Ronald Gochez has to say here.

Folks, this man is TEACHING children this hate and stupidity. What Mr. Gochez doesn’t seem to realize is that he is the very product of the same capitalism and imperialism he so despises. He goes on and on about the United States stealing his land without so much as mentioning how his people stole Mexico from the Olmecs, the Teotihuacans, the Mayans, the Zapotecs, the Mixtecs, the Toltecs, and the Aztecs!! Where was that in his grand speech? Where was his castigation of the Spanish conquest of an innovative and industrial people? Because I’m willing to bet that Mr. Gochez has more Spanish blood in him that early Aztecan blood, if any!! Interesting that Cortez wasn’t anywhere in his diatribe.

I think it’s about time we started charging and punishing people with sedition and treason before this country is dragged into another Mexican-American war, only this time it will be completely on US soil!

  1. I find it ironic that if this idiot made such a speech in Mexico about the Mexican government, he’d be thrown into a dark jail cell for a long time.

Mexico is a country in deep trouble and anarchy reigns there. If we gave California like some of these idiots want, they’d reduce it to the same poverty, corruption and crime levels that are present in almost all areas of Mexico.

  2. So when the Tea Partiers call for a new Ameriican Revolution they should be arrested?

    • Yes.

      • If the “revolution” they are talking about involves violence, sedition, or treason, yes. the Tea Party “revolution” is through the electoral process.

  3. What a “maroon” (to quote Bugs).

“Borders, language, culture” to quote somebody who’s banned in Britain.

  4. Oh, Steve. Please show me where the tea partyers are calling for the wholesale return of sovereign land to a foreign government by force the way La Taxation does. I can’t respond to a false premise.

  5. OK, but first show me where in your definitions of “treason” and “sedition” it says anything about about returning sovereign land to a foreign government by force.

The sovereign referred to in your definition is a monarch. ie…
    1. One that exercises supreme, permanent authority, especially in a nation or other governmental unit, as:
    a. A king, queen, or other noble person who serves as chief of state; a ruler or monarch.
    b. A national governing council or committee.

If the Tea Partiers are all about non-violence and “revolution” through the electoral process, why then did they choose a violent act of rebellion for their muse? Why not something such as the “Continental Congress Revisited”?

I read where the guy claims capitalism and imperialism are the enemy but where does he say he is declaring war on the US?

    • Steve, you answer my question and I’ll answer yours. You also completely misunderstand what sovereignty is in this context, so your comment makes absolutely no sense in that regard. Answer my question and I’ll answer yours.

      • In February a North Carolina Tea Party group, The North Carolina Freedom Project posted an article to it’s news letter about seceding from the Union.

In April TX Gov Rick Perry gave a speech at a Tea PArty Convention where he proposed secession as an option.

OK, go ahead and tell me how they mean a legal secession through the legislative process. or they aren’t going to return the land to another government.

Or how about when a Tea PArtier holds up a sign that alludes to violence. Such as at a health care reform rally where there was a sign which said, “If Brown (newly elected Mass. Senator) can’t stop it a Browning can”.

        • Steve, the North Carolina Freedom Project is NOT a “Tea Party group.” They just happen to have similar beliefs. Seceding from the Union is different than turning over land to a foreign government as La Raza desires.

Texas is the only state in the union that is a state by treaty and also the only state that was its only country prior to becoming a state. Secession is very much an option for Texas, but an unrealistic one. However, Perry again never stated anything about seceding and turning Texas over to Mexico as this teacher is. There, I told you.

For every tea partier you claim alludes to violence, I can show you a leftist one just as well. Don’t forget that the SDS is a leftist organization. La Raza is a leftist organization. If you want to call out individual idiots, you’ll lose. We both know that the left and the right both have their nutjobs. Look at Ron Paul!

As for the Browning comment – that guy should be arrested for communicating a threat. Period. Now, let’s hear you say that about this teacher.

        • Ummm… there is no legal right to secession. The civil war proved that.

        • Ok, I answered your question and you responded to that, I’ll leave it at that. But you did promise to answer my question if I answered yours, so it goes back to if the Tea Party is all about non-violence and “revolution” through the electoral process, why then did they choose a violent act of rebellion for their muse? Why not something such as the “Continental Congress Revisited”?

If you are going to allude to violent revolution then you are going to have to expect people to think you mean violent revolution. But I will let you tell me why.

        • No, you didn’t answer mt question. You pointed out s non-tea party group and the governor of Texas, neither of which are calling for the wholesale return of sovereign land to a foreigner government. Try to stay on topic.

        • I did answer your question and I did stay on topic. So the North Carolin group is just like a tea party group but with a slightly different name. And the Republic of Texas was a foreign government so if Perry wants to Texas to secede where are they going to go? Back to being a foreign country. Sorry if it didn’t meet your standards of correctness but there it is. Way to squirm out of answering.

Also, Todd and Sarah Palin were both members of the Alaska Independence Movement which at one time called for Alaska to secede.

If you want the teacher arrested so badly, go to California and swear out charges. Why are you waiting around for someone else to do it if you feel so strongly about it?

        • The North Carolina group is NOT, I repeat, NOT a tea party group. I can’t be any more plain that than. NRA is a tea pary like group. National Association of Gun Rights is a tea party like group. The Tenth Amendment Foundation is a tea party like group. They all have similar beliefs, but NOT the tea party.

Texas would never secede, but if it did, yes it would become the Republic of Texas – a completely autonomous nation. Again, show me where the tea party want to give back sovereign territory to a foreign government! You can’t. It’s okay to say that you misspoke or made a bad comparison and we can move on from there.

As for the teacher issue, I’m not in law enforcement and don’t have that authority. I’ve made my calls to the appropriate officials. And I have a job and live in Texas. Unless you’re volunteering to fund my trip…?

        • OK fine, I misspoke but I answered your question. You just don’t agree with the answer. Stop moving the goal post and live up to your end of the deal you made. Answer my question.

If the Tea Party is all about non-violence and “revolution” through the electoral process, why then did they choose a violent act of rebellion for their muse? Why not something such as the “Continental Congress Revisited”?

You are authorized to make a citizens arrest. Go for it or shut up about it.

        • If the Tea Party is all about non-violence and “revolution” through the electoral process, why then did they choose a violent act of rebellion for their muse? Um, the “Boston Tea Party” wasn’t a violent act – unless you’re a crate of tea. It was a rebellion against taxes on the people to create a monopoly by the government (King). The First Continental Congress wasn’t even created until AFTER the Tea Party, so that wouldn’t work either. Again, I can’t argue a false premise. It’s like asking, “why do you like sleeping with sheep?” If the person doesn’t sleep with sheep, he/she can’t very well answer the question.

  6. la raza my ass!
Here’s the best I’ve seen from “Maxine” in a long time…(minus the cartoon)

We need to show more sympathy for these people.
    * They travel miles in the heat.
    * They risk their lives crossing a border.
    * They don’t get paid enough wages.
    * They do jobs that others won’t do or are afraid to do.
    * They live in crowded conditions among a people who speak a different language.
    * They rarely see their families, and they face adversity all day ~ every day..

I’m not talking about illegal Mexicans ~ I’m talking about our troops! Doesn’t it seem strange that many Democrats and Republicans are willing to lavish all kinds of social benefits on illegals, but don’t support our troops?

Don’t re-elect anyone this fall! They couldn’t possibly do worse!

    Thank you CJ

  7. Oh, and I’m from Montana. If nothing gets done in AZ about the problem and the other border states, meaning our elected officials, then it’s soon becoming time for Vigilante Law. Abraham Lincoln used it very effectively during the Civil War in Montana Territory to keep gold from falling into the hands of the confederates. It worked then, who’s to say it wouldn’t happen now–for different reasons.
    Dusgalan of MT

  8. The hypocrisy is think. The teabaggers and republicans call for the very same thing daily. And yes, they call for armed revolution.

    • Swizzle, provide examples of Republicans calling for armed revolution. Thanks.

  9. So when it’s something you agree with, it’s peaceful civil disobedience. Does that mean you are OK with the Earth Liberation Front torching a car dealership full of SUV’s? After all, destruction of property, arson, breaking and entering aren’t violent acts according to you, unless you’re an SUV. No, I’ll be willing to bet you call them terrorists.

It doesn’t matter that the Continental Congress was after the Tea Party. If you you going to reach back into history for guidance you have wide latitude to pick your muse. The First Continental Congress was partially as a result of the Boston Tea Party and it was the peaceful attempt to address the issues with the crown through a legislative process. Really, they should have used the Whiskey or Shay’s Rebellion, that would at least make sense.

    • Wait, are you asking if I agree with the efforts that led to the American Revolution? Seriously? And are you seriously comparing those acts with the terrorist acts carried out by the ELF? Really?

      • See, I was right! When it’s something you don’t approve of it’s terrorism. Economic terrorism is still economic terrorism. Many founding fathers disapproved of the Boston Tea Party and feared British retribution.

        • Ummm, no. The ELF IS classified as a domestic terrorist organization. Not my wording. I still say it speaks volumes about you that compare the ELF to the revolutionaries that provided this land and freedom we enjoy (for now). It’s hard to argue with such completely flawed logic.

        • According to you the Boston Tea Party was not a violent event because there was only property damage. When the ELF torched the cars at the dealership there was only property damage so according to your logic, it wasn’t a violent event. It’s your own completely flawed logic you’re having trouble with. And your hypocrisy. Why did you ask for proof of Tea Party wrongdoing but you didn’t challenge me the ELF.

        • An what oppressive government owned the dealership (assuming this was before Obama took ownership)? What tyranny are they protesting against by torching the vehicles?

Okay, I’ll play your silly game. Show me proof of the violent acts of the ELF. Never mind, I’ll do it for you:

I could just go on and on…But, you won’t find articles of Tea Partiers doing any of these things, regardless of how you misinterpret their “muse”.

        • “An what oppressive government owned the dealership (assuming this was before Obama took ownership)?”

The same one that owned the tea. None. The tea was owned by a publicly traded company. The British East India Company owned the tea, not any government. It was the tax imposed by the crown that the colonists were protesting against! Your lack of knowledge is appalling.

        • Yes, and they were raging against a government imposed tax that created an effective monopoly on tea. What government intervention are the ELF terrorists protesting? None. You lack of common sense is appalling.

        • So now they were “raging” sounds violent to me. I’m glad you agree with me.

  10. Bob, yes, there is a legal right to secession in Texas. (perhaps in other states, also. I have never studied such an idea.) Texas is the only state in our union that can fly the Texas flag equal to, not below our country’s flag.

I don’t think it will ever happen while I know we Texans have the right and many of us have the spirit to secede and not bow to the Communist radicals that reside in our White House.

I believe six months from now, when we vote that secession won’t be a “front burner” idea because we’ll vote out many career Senators and Congress critters.

  11. If this guy is employed by the State of California, then fomenting revolution against the State, violates his oath and subjects him to termination.
If a Quaker is fired for insering nonviolence into the California loyaty oath, even an Hispanic should be caught up by the short hairs and immediately removed from the classroom

CAL STATE EAST BAYFebruary 29, 2008|By Nanette Asimov, Chronicle Staff WriterCalifornia State University East Bay has fired a math teacher after six weeks on the job because she inserted the word “nonviolently” in her state-required
    “Oath of Allegiance form.

Marianne Kearney-Brown, a Quaker and graduate student who began teaching remedial math to undergrads Jan. 7, lost her $700-a-month part-time job after refusing to sign an 87-word Oath of Allegiance to the Constitution that the state requires of elected officials and public employees”

And you could imagine this guy as a disaster worker for your kiddies?
“I understand that as a public employee I am a disaster service worker pursuant to Government Code 3100 and 3102 and that I am required to take this oath before entering the duties of my employment. In the event of natural, manmade, or war-caused emergencies which result in conditions of disaster or extreme peril to life, property, and resources, I am subject to disaster
services activities assigned to me by my supervisor.”
