A SOLDIER'S PERSPECTIVE
THE WEB'S LEADING MILITARY BLOG SINCE 2004
Those who know who I am know I love country music. Partly because I think they really get the military mentality. I know there are some who read here who would debate me on that one, but then again, I don’t really give a rip what they think.
Anyway, I have a couple of things I wanted to put up. First off, if you want to write letters to soldiers, I encourage you to either join Soldiers Angels or go to Anysoldier and find someone who needs support and just start writing. And if you are a girlfriend or wife, remember, handwritten letters mean so much! Email and skype are nice, but I think through the ages, having that piece of paper to read over and over again, no matter where he is…
My dearest love, its almost dawn
I’ve been lying here all night long, wondering where you might be
I saw your mama and I showed her the ring
Man on the television said something, so I couldn’t sleep
But I’ll be all right, I’m just missing you
And this is me kissing you
X’s and O’s in a letter from home
I hold it up and show my buddies
Like we ain’t scared and our boots ain’t muddy, and they all laugh
‘Cause she calls me ‘Honey’, but they take it hard
‘Cause I don’t read the good parts
I fold it up and put it in my shirt
Pick up my gun and get back to work
And it keeps me driving on
Waiting on letters from home
In addition to those sites listed above, you can go here and on the bottom right corner, you can write just one letter. In addition to sending good words to a military member who is deployed, the Zac Brown Band and Ram Trucks will make a donation to Soldiers Angels. Total win all around.
Take a few minutes of your day and send a Letter From Home, please.

I used to get addresses from anysoldier.com and the last time I tried to get one, I got blocked and was told that I had to make a donation if I wanted another address. I guess I took too many addresses since I used them to send out Christmas cards. I still think letter writing is important but I have to find other ways to do it these days.

Deb, that is really unfortunate to hear. I know Marty has made a lot of changes over the years and it might come down to just asking bloggers if they know of someone or a unit that needs support. I cannot commit to Soldier’s Angels rules and requirements but I am fortunate to have parents of military members or even personal friends who are in touch with guys who need letters and care packages. Every once in a while CJ here will send out a “needs help” email, so you might want to get on his mailing list.

I am on CJ’s list and have gotten a few addresses from him. I was just glancing at the Soldier’s Angels website and might try to sign up for their letter writing team.

Well please do one for the Zac Brown Band. I got the actual paper and envelope from a Dodge dealer when on my road trip to the Grand Canyon. They had a stack in the waiting room. Just a lovely thing for a band to do and Zac Brown and his wife just announced they’re expecting their fourth daughter. That right there should entice anyone to have sympathy for the man and throw him, his band, Dodge Ram, and our troops a bone.

Great post! I got three addresses off of http://www.anysoldier.com and had guys in my son’s Cub Scout pack to send letters to each. The soldiers sent back pictures of them holding their letters. It really brought the idea of people serving in harm’s way home.

I belong to the treasureourtroops.org and you can send care packages or letters when you adopt a soldier. No donation required to send letters.
