It’s that time of year again when the country comes together to show its support for its veterans – past, present and future. As different companies send me information about their efforts to recognize our veterans, I’ll continue to post them. This just came to me from UNO’s Chicago Grill. If you haven’t eaten at UNO’s, check ‘em out. GREAT food any time of the year.

As part of a long-standing tradition of giving back and saying “thanks” to all U.S. military men and women, Uno’s is offering all active and retired military personnel a discount in honor of Veteran’s Day from November 7 through November 11. The discount is 19.43% off their entire food bill (excluding alcohol), no matter how many family members and friends they dine with. The percentage off is a nod to the year the company was founded – 1943.

“We want all service men and women and their families to come in and let us take care of them. They do so much to take care of us. This is a small token of our appreciation for all they do and have done,” says Frank Guidara, chief executive officer of Uno’s and former Army officer. “Sometimes we take our freedom for granted and we want everyone in uniform to know that we’re doing our best to always remember how grateful we are for that freedom.”

Veteran’s Day is an annual United States federal holiday honoring military veterans. It is also celebrated as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day in other parts of the world. Falling on November 11, the day marks the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I.

The discount is available to all active and retired military personnel at Uno’s nationwide.

I got this press release from presumptive House Majority Leader John Boehner today:

House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) will honor Veterans Day today by visiting Arlington National Cemetery, where he will accompany the Vice President to a wreath-laying at the Tomb of the Unknowns. Leader Boehner will attend the ceremony that follows at the cemetery’s Memorial Amphitheater.

“Today, we pause to pay proper respect to the heroes who have donned the uniform of our country and – along with their families – sacrificed so much so that we may enjoy the blessings of freedom,” Leader Boehner said. “As we keep faith with our former defenders, we also pray for our sons and daughters overseas in Iraq, Afghanistan, and around the world standing guard in defense of our freedom.”

Veterans Day is a day to honor our living veterans, both currently serving and formerly served. While we should honor our troops EVERY DAY, the day for visiting national cemeteries for political photo ops is Memorial Day, not Veterans Day.

On the plus side, he just released the following video to pay tribute on the occasion of the Marine Corps birthday and on behalf of our Wounded Warriors:

To commemorate Veterans Day, PepsiCo has announced that through its Dream Machine recycling initiative, a $500,000 donation has been made to the Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities (EBV), a national program offering free career training, education and job creation for post-9/11 U.S. veterans with disabilities. This is the first donation made to the EBV through the Dream Machine program, and PepsiCo will make a minimum annual contribution to the EBV of $500,000, over the next several years.

The EBV program has benefited many of our veterans, including graduate J.R. Martinez. J.R. returned home from duty like many of today’s heroes–with a disability, no job and challenges of readjusting to civilian life. While serving as a driver of a Humvee with the United States Army in Iraq, J.R. hit a landmine and suffered severe burns to more than 40 percent of his body. With credit to the EBV program, he has gone on to be a successful actor (currently on ABC’s All My Children) and motivational speaker, sharing his message of resilience and optimism to many across the country. More than 300 wounded warriors have graduated from the EBV program since its inception in 2007 and J.R. is just one of many inspiring stories.

Americans can help Turn Bottles to Jobs for U.S. veterans with disabilities—the more bottles and cans Americans recycle in a Dream Machine, the more PepsiCo will donate to the EBV. In fact, in addition to its ongoing commitment, for every 10 million pounds of recycled beverage containers collected, PepsiCo will contribute an additional $250,000 to the veteran organization.

WORDS AND MUSIC BY
S. Householder

I’ve got the reach and the teeth of a killin’ machine, ith a need to bleed you when the light goes green, best believe, I’m in a zone to be, from my Yin to my Yang to my Yang Tze.
Put a grin on my chin when you come to me, ‘cuz I’ll win,
I’m a one-of-a-kind and I’ll bring death to the place you’re about to be: another river of blood runnin’ under my feet.

Forged in a fire lit long ago, stand next to me, you’ll never stand alone. I’m last to leave, but the first to go, Lord, make me dead before you make me old.
I feed on the fear of the devil inside of the enemy faces in my sights: aim with the hand, shoot with the mind, kill with a heart like arctic ice

I am a soldier and I’m marching on, I am a warrior and this is my song I bask in the glow of the rising war, lay waste to the ground of an enemy shore, wade through the blood spilled on the floor, and if another one stands I’ll kill some more.
Bullet in the breach and a fire in me, like a cigarette thrown to gasoline, if death don’t bring you fear, I swear, you’ll fear these marchin’ feet.

Come to the nightmare, come to me, deep down in the dark where the devil be, in the maw with the jaws and the razor teeth, where the brimstone burns and the angel weeps.
Call to the gods if I cross your path and my silhouette hangs like a body bag; hope is a moment now long past, the shadow of death is the one I cast.

I am a soldier and I’m marching on, I am a warrior and this is my song
My eyes are steel and my gaze is long, I am a warrior and this is my song

Now I live lean and I mean to inflict the grief, and the least of me’s still out of your reach. The killing machine’s gonna do the deed, until the river runs dry and my last breath leaves.
Chin in the air with a head held high, I’ll stand in the path of the enemy line.Feel no fear, know my pride: for God and Country I’ll end your life.

I am a soldier and I’m marching on, I am a warrior and this is my song
My eyes are steel and my gaze is long, I am a warrior and this is my song
