A-TACS at SHOT Show 2010

A-TACS at SHOT Show 2010

We’ve acknowledge the ongoing websession over new camo pattern A-TACS. But, at last week’s SHOT Show when A-TACS, or advanced tactical concealment system, was officially unveiled, the camo clamor reached an all-time high.

Eric at Soldier Systems, one of the biggest A-TACS websessor, spotted it in person on four separate occasions at the show. The camo appeared in a variety of forms on items from Remington, Bushmaster, DPMS / Panther Arms, EOTAC, Danner Boots, Tactical Assault Gear, Blue Force Gear and Emerson Knives (to name a few).

In the video below at about 1:55, Fernando Coelho, President of EOTAC, shows off the new pattern on a combat uniform that they spent a year creating. “Whether you have a sling, helmet or clothing … it all blends well together,” he says about the camo. “There are no hard lines.”

Camouflage Snuggie

Snuggie Designer CamoNow there’s no way to avoid that ubiquitous (but oh so comfy) Snuggie. It’s now available in a pattern most in the military find irresistible — camouflage.

If you’re unfamiliar with the fleece blanket with sleeves, it’s gotten pretty, well, cozy with the masses. The infamous infomercial shows a reenactment of the modern woman’s struggle to stay warm. When she goes from too cold to just right after wearing the one-size-fits-all sheet, it’s easy to be hypnotized by the promise of endless comfort.

But when the Air Force Times referred to the new style as the “Tactical Snuggie,” one must wonder in what strategic operations it would be worn. As suitable armor when battling the drafty house? As a quick disguise from enemy attackers attempting to liberate the couch?

With more than 4 million sold in 2009 alone, it was only a matter of time before the Snuggie infiltrated the military world. Along with camo, the makers of Snuggie added more limited-edition colors including zebra and leopard print, midnight black and passion purple. So, snag your own designer Snuggie ($14.95) while supplies last. And hold on to your hat, because like with any crazy informercial offer, they’ll throw in a state-of-the-art, top-of-the-line reading light for FREE.

Once you obtain your camo Snuggie, wear it all over town (the official site suggests pub crawls, office buildings, movie theaters and sporting events!), and you’ll likely wind up on this website.

Maxpedition Sitka GearSlinger Review

sitka-gearslingerWho needs all that tactical pant storage when you’re wearing a Maxpedition Sitka GearSlinger on your back? Tactical Gearhead recently demonstrated just how spacious it can be, especially when you’re carrying a mix of smaller and larger items.

This backpack-meets-sling made with a Teflon fabric retails for just under $130 and features a single-shoulder strap for easy access and speedy on-off time. To keep out thieving hands besides your own, there’s built-in theft protection around the zipper area, and a triple polyurethane coat will keep out that other unwanted element — water.

Its best feature, as demonstrated by Tactical Gearhead, is the ability to effortlessly swing the pack from the back of the body to the front, which of course allows you to quickly access all your tactical tools in those most critical moments.

While overall a mostly positive review, some criticisms Tactical Gearhead had were that the security feature near the zippers does not easily snap shut. Therefore, if you are trying to secure it in a rush, it could be difficult to lock and become an open target to pickpockets after all.

The reviewer also mentions that when you are putting the bag on over your jacket, it could make things bunch up a bit. “But that downside is offset by how easy it is just to get into the bag without having to set the bag down.”

The biggest upside to the Maxpedition Sitka GearSlinger? It doesn’t look like a purse, he says. And this non-purse is available in black, OD green, khaki, foliage green and khaki foliage.
